Summer can make you feel lighter and brighter with the longer days and warm weather. Summer tunes are upbeat with carefree lyrics and local restaurants thrive with excited tourists. The dawn of a new year can also bring renewed hope and energy or is simply a welcome relief to the end of a hectic 12 months.
These dreamy activities can help you savour the moment and find peace in the craziness of the holiday period. Embrace the season that is all about ice cream, flip-flops, and beach curls.
Get whisked away by the desserts at Old School Kafey
This late-night Korean dessert bar in Haymarket is nothing short of dreamy. Old School Kafey is ideal for a post-work, post-dinner or post-shopping meltdown treat. The huge size of their desserts is equally as impressive as the light-as-a-feather texture. And the variety on the menu will suit many different tastes, which includes matcha green tea, emerald snow and mango bingsu, banana and Nutella brick toast, strawberry waffles and iced coffee.
All of the desserts look as decadent and delicious as the next. You will find yourself frequently craning your neck as the wait staff pass your table. And if you haven't experienced bingsu before, you're in for a divine dessert intervention! Expect to taste sweet bites of pure heaven. The dessert bar is located at 459 Pitt Street, Haymarket and is open seven days a week 9am - 10pm, with a later closing time of 11pm on Friday and Saturday. Visit their page on

The Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan is a picturesque park in Western Sydney that boasts over 4,000 plant species. The beauty of the diverse flora and the enchanting Cumberland Plain Woodland is captivating. You will think that you have stepped into a children's storybook. Escape for the day or an afternoon to discover the hidden spots and secret garden pathways that will transport you to another world.
The garden features a variety of scenic walking trails, picnic areas, a cafe and a children's playground. Find swamp wallabies and tawny frogmouth owls on the Woodland Walk or meander around the lakes on the Central Valley walk. Spend a day in the coastal village of Avalon
Located 37km north of the city, Avalon shares its name with a mystical island in Celtic mythology. Avalon Island was known as a paradise that became the burial place of King Arthur. In Sydney's Avalon, there may not be any buried Celtic kings, but it is known for being a special place to visit and even has a beach named
Paradise . Avalon also has a distinctively artistic, bohemian vibe that makes it a perfect destination for a dreamy Summer's day out.
There are many activities available, from stand-up paddle boarding at
Clareville Beach , taking an art class at the
Avalon Creative Space , to browsing boutique shops, galleries and visiting alfresco cafes. It is easy to fill your day in Avalon but you won't feel the stress of the hustle and bustle here.
The Newport pub is a local favourite that sits along the water and provides a great viewing spot for gorgeous sunsets. The Newport also regularly hosts live music on weekends during Summer. Savour the view with an aperitivo or gelato while you mellow out to acoustic tunes.

Gaze up at constellations in the clear night sky
There are surprisingly a few places where you can go stargazing in Sydney. And the warmer season makes it a great time to venture out at night. Instead of tossing and turning in bed while fighting the heat, stay up late and have a starry adventure instead. It is also a sneaky way to avoid the crowds during the busy tourist season.
Guided stargazing is available at
Sydney Observatory in Millers Point,
Macquarie University in North Ryde and at the
Northern Sydney Astronomical Society in Belrose (bookings are essential). Gazing up at the sky and viewing the constellations will make you appreciate how mighty and magical our universe truly is. Any clear night of the year is suited for stargazing but you may want to dedicate time to see the eye-catching Gereminds meteor shower taking place around the 14-15 December. To find out about local astronomy sightings, visit the community website
Sydney City Skywatchers
Follow up your stargazing with an ice-cream sundae or watch a late-night movie in keeping with the imaginative theme of your evening. It will be "Jupiter Ascending" starring Channing Tatum for me!
