Does Tropical Queensland get any better than this?

A few months ago I visited Fitzroy Island for a day trip and review. I vowed at the time that a few hours on the island weren't enough, and four months later here I am back at Fitzroy. This time staying with a friend for TWO WHOLE NIGHTS! Indeed the experience isn't disappointing. What a beautiful place. Here's what's so great about it:

1. The Water! With each visit to Fitzroy, it seems to be at the end of a rainy patch. This time the boat ride over was windy and the skies were overcast, but low and behold, when we arrived at the bay the water was a glowing turquoise. On a clear day water visibility is 20-30 metres. As you pull into the small marina you can sense this calmness, and the ocean was still and very inviting. Not only is the main beach area fantastic; the next day we walked over to Nudey Beach and actually squealed with excitement. As you come out of this dark rainforest walk, you suddenly see vibrant clear water below the rocks and we needed to get down there ASAP.

2. Affordability. Of course island resorts can easily rip you off. Not Fitzroy. We each had a half hour massage on our private balcony for $40. What? are they kidding?? They could have charged heaps more. Plus there's a daily happy hour with cocktails for $13.50. It became a ritual to have a Pina Colada or two each afternoon. The food at Foxy's Bar and Café is also very reasonable; my friend and I usually shared some type of burger and chips because they were huge, costing us less than $10 each. A nice bottle of wine will only set you back around $30. There's flexibility with accommodation too, which ranges from around $195 to $395 per night. Look out for seasonal specials.

3. The Sunsets. There's a great buzz at Fitzroy every night. From around 5PM holidaying folk start congregating down in front of Foxey's Bar. After our late swims we perched our salty selves at the most easterly section of the bar facing out to sea. Some people took their drinks down to the sand to get closer to the action. It's a real spectacle to watch the changing sky colours from mauve and pink to vibrant orange. The GM told us that Fitzroy has the best sunsets in the area because it's the only Westerly facing spot, and you won't see anything like it in Cairns. It's moments like these that made it worth it staying overnight because you'd miss these experiences on a day trip.

4. The Accommodation. Do you know how fun it is waking up in a luxurious Balinese style room, making coffee in a marble kitchenette and THEN taking your first coffee of the day down to the sand?? Our suite was only 15 metres from the ocean, so the "where to sit" options were usually A. on the spacious balcony or B. actually down on the beach. And at night the room was so quiet as there's no road nearby, just lawn, rainforest and beach. We needed the sleep to muster energy for swimming out to the ocean trampoline…

5. Fun Activities. There's no claustrophobic vibe on Fitzroy as there's so much to do. Kayaking, snorkelling, stand up paddle boarding and well, sunbaking on the big round ocean trampoline. We also did the rainforest walk to Nudey Beach and the Secret Garden – both pretty awesome. If you have the energy you can also walk to the Summit for a great view – it takes about 3 hours all up. Finally, if you're mature, inquiring people like us, you can collect interesting pieces of the white coral to spell out silly words or create creepy looking little people…
