I've never really been a fan of the gym; I see them as sweaty places where people stare at each other, trying to pump iron and 'flex'. In my opinion you can work up a sweat outside, but Fitness First Platinum Club gym in Mirdif Mall is a game changer. It has every piece of equipment you could need, including a large set of weights; TRX training straps; punching bag; spinning class area and vast floor space for stretching or if you'd like to practice yoga. My kinda gym.
Instead of weathered, overused pieces of equipment, Fitness First's machines are shiny and new, because you don't really want someone else's sweaty germs on your hands once they've used the machine you're after. It's a large, well air-conditioned space where they have vibroplates, kettle bells, bosu balls and every type of foam roller foam assistant for your workout.
I was pretty impressed because I visited with my family and as our ages range from 22 to 52, we all had different goals. Thankfully I was left alone to do my workout, but my mother looked like she was struggling somewhat and the personal trainers were great. And it's not often my mom likes to work out, but we wanted some quality time together and since that first day at the gym, she went back four times over a week.
Fitness First is doubly refreshing because while I like to exercise outside, or on the beach, it isn't always possible. When it's raining in the UK any sort of outdoor activity gets vetoed. Plus, I found the gym surprisingly motivating because of the other gym bunnies and passionate personal trainers.
You can get a week's trial pass for the gym, which is what I did while I was holidaying, but you can also sign up for a full membership, which gives you full access to all the classes and use of the gym at the opening times.
Mirroring the vastness of the gym, the changing rooms are large, clean, and smell like freshly cut grass as opposed to chlorine. Both male and female changing rooms have a sauna and steam room, so no frisky business, but it's mostly for sanitary purposes. In the female sauna they have a Vatika leave-in hair-mask to put on your hair while you steam because post-swim your hair can look a little bit drowned-rat. God, they're considerate.
Post-workout you can enjoy a smoothie at the bar in the gym, or a protein shake while you chill out in the free to use computer area. Surf the net, or take advantage of the free tea and coffee while you cool down or wait for your gym partner.
Fitness First might just turn you into a gym bunny, and hey, who doesn't want to be fit?
