The Spit, or Southport Spit as it is also known, is one of those special fishing spots on the Gold Coast that offers easy access, plenty of parking and the occasional fish.

Most families will know The Spit as the location of Sea World and Sea World Nara Resort. Fancier visitors may be familiar with the Sheraton Mirage Resort and Spa or the Palazzo Versace. But the real gem of The Spit is the simple picnic and fishing adventures it offers.

The Spit is located north of Main Beach on Sea World Drive, just follow the signs to Sea World. Once you drive past Sea World and the other resorts, you can either pull off into one of the small car parks that allow for fishing on either side of The Spit or continue to the northern end to fish off the rocks.

Fishing off the rocks is quite popular but can pose more of a challenge with small children. On our latest adventure, we opted to fish off the sand. The seaway is a hub of activity and watching the boats and jet-skis go by is great entertainment for the kids - especially when the fish aren't cooperating!

If you are feeling more active you can enjoy the 3.7km Federation Walk, which starts at Sea World. Federation Walk is supported by the community group Friends of Federation Walk which aims to support the revegetation of The Spit. Other facilities include a café and convenience store where you can stock up on more bait to feed the fish.

The Spit is also a lovely spot to watch the sunset after a long day of Gold Coast fun.
