Brisbane's bounty of whiting, flathead, tailor, mud crab, bream, prawns and squid make angling our most popular pastime.

Cast off as the sun rises or wait till the late afternoon for the tidal changes bringing schools of fish to your dinner plate.

In Brisbane, start with these top 10 fishing spots.

The bridge is demolished but the entry portal was left for fishers.

Wait for the tide to drop on the south side to catch sand crabs, whiting, bream and tailor, caught during low tide on the sandy banks.
Brissie's longest timber pier is popular with tourists and fishers.

The swirling water around the pylons entices fish into your clutches. You'll catch bream, whiting and tailor.



Checking the water depths along Nudgee Beach before casting your line to boost your chance of a bite.
Bordered by mangroves, hover in shallow waters where sandy ripples at the shoreline draw whiting and flathead.
The fishing platform at 400 Lytton Road is surrounded by amenities for an easy day outdoors.

Arrive early to catch catfish and bream.
On Flinders Parade, the park is a favourite for kids, amused by the playground and basketball court when the fish aren't biting.

Have a barbecue after you've caught your lunch of bream and flathead.
When the Brisbane River flooded the park, the local council rebuilt the damaged fishing platform. Since then, it's growing in popularity as a prime spot for mud crabs in winter, and mullet and catfish in the warmer seasons. Bring Fido, as the park has a giant off-leash area.



Drive along Wyampa Road to reach the Deep Water Bend Reserve, along the southern bank of Pine River.

Choose from either of the fishing platforms or bring your boat, using the ramp to access the river.

Barbecues, a playground and picnic tables make this the perfect spot for a day of fishing for carp, herring, flathead and mullet.
If you'd prefer fish instead, start early or wait till evening when the fish return after the ferries sail away. You can also try from the piers at Newstead House, nabbing cod, snapper and jewfish.

Accessed via Breakfast Creek Road, south of Albion Park, you'll pass the popular Breakfast Creek Hotel , serving thick steaks and cold beer.
Take a boat ride Mud Island at the mouth of Brisbane River, where you'll catch mackerel, tailor, crab and bream.

It's a nice day on the water, but you'll have more success fishing after dusk.
The Point, at the end of Main Road, is a nice choice for children trying fishing for the first time.

Stop at the nearby bait shop for supplies.

The very long jetty gives access to shallow waters where you'll catch bream, flathead, tailor and squid.

If you're catching and releasing, treat yourself to the best fish and chips at Wellington Point Takeaway at 400 Main Road or drive down the road to Chumley Warner's Traditional British Fish and Chips on 190 Birkdale Road for haddock and cod, pies, pasties and mushy peas.
