Newcastle has a huge number of great fishing spots. Many of the best spots are kept secret, known only to the avid fisherman - until now.

The Hunter River has great fishing spots. One spot that always seems to get overlooked is near Sandgate. About 500 metres south of the Ash Island bridge, near Hexham McDonalds, is a little park where you can pull up in your car, get out the camp chair and throw in a line.

It's best to fish here on an incoming tide. It's also a good spot to try out the lures. It's usually a quiet spot, except for the passing traffic.

There are no facilities so it's completely BYO. But just a short walk is Hexham McDonalds. There is always a shady tree to sit under while waiting for the fish to bite.

If you are a good fisherman you will be rewarded with an assortment of bream, flathead and the occasional whiting.

Happy fishing.
