Fresh, abundant, friendly gastonomic fare
We travel to Newington, in the shadow of ANZ Stadium and Sydney Olympic Park, to the Newington Marketplace (which, by the way, I noticed when you stand in the marketplace and look toward Olympic Park you can see all the way down Olympic Boulevard, which includes a great view of ANZ Stadium). It really is a magnificent backdrop. That being said we are here for some food. The selection a local fish and chip joint titled Fishbowl.
This place is a family run establishment with, brothers Nick and Peter taking the helm with their wise and friendly dad. Nick mans the front, while Peter handles the cooking. Both are friendly beyond belief and seem to know everybody who either comes to the counter or just saunters by casually. There is a genuine feeling like you are part of the family when you go to this establishment. Peter is a chef by trade and this comes through not only in what gets put on the plate, but also in the immaculate presentation of the hulking trays of salad that fill the displays in the store.
Fishbowl does a roaring takeaway trade or there are ample seating configurations which take in that stunning view I just mentioned. The food here is top notch, with my favourite being the fish cocktails; long pieces of flaky white fish in a thin batter, served with piping hot crisp chips smothered in vinegar. My youngest son loves the calamari, big rings of lightly crumbed, tender, alabaster goodness. Also highly recommended by my middle son, who might I add is quite the food connoisseur, is the salt and pepper squid. They are not battered or crumbed, but the flavour is out-of-the-world!
Fish and chips
The prices are very reasonable, with fish and chips costing just over $8 and for the bigger eaters the Fishbowl Platter at $17.50 nets you four prawn cutlets, four calamari rings, four fish cocktails, chips and salad. Also on the menu are burgers, smoothies, all day breakfast selection and a fantastic selection of salads.
Calamari and salad
If you are in the area and are feeling Mediterranean, Fishbowl is the place to go. You will not only love the food, but be won over by the friendliness of the proprietors.
Also just new to the menu tuck into a deep friend Mars bar for only $3.50……a gooey calorie rich treat for winter.
