Fishbowl is a welcome addition at 155 Greville St, Prahran. Open from 11am to 9pm seven days a week, they offer a healthy option for lunches and dinners. A salad bar with a Japanese twist, they have a gorgeous spot on the corner, with stained glass fittings, and clean, streamlined bespoke timber furniture that was surprisingly comfortable. Having had their Grand Opening on the weekend just gone (5-7 Nov 2021), I couldn't resist an all weekender of $10 bowls opening specials. In fact, I made sure I bought a few bowls to take home for dinner as well


The music was pumping as they promised, but a little heavy for my taste and didn't quite sit comfortably with the serene surrounds. The ethos behind Fishbowl is to empower people to make healthier decisions and to start a conversation about health and conscious eating. It's why this dynamic company has developed their own run club, created a surf team and more. Recognising great food starts with great ingredients, they make everything from scratch. The same goes for their dressing. They source a range of local and Japanese ingredients to produce a delicate range of dressings free from any artificial bad boys.


The founders are young guns with a goal to create beautiful salads and put them in a context that didn't previously exist. With salad bars in Docklands, Richmond, and Flinders Lane, I'm just happy not to have to travel far to get healthy offerings at an eatery. They have what they call Ghost Kitchens open for pick up and delivery via Ubereats, Deliveroo and Door Dash. If you're unable to make it to the eatery, you can order online here.


Every bowl we ordered was delicious. It was super fresh to the taste and those nuts they garnish it with before serving it just adds that (MasterChef) crunch to the bite, not to mention taste to the bowl. I also liked that the salad and base ratio (I got brown rice as my base) were perfectly matched. I've eaten at another eatery before that does rice bowls, and that's exactly what you get. A whole lot of rice, and very little on top, that you feel you've been robbed.


For the coconut lover, the new Coconut Chicken was rich and delicious, not to mention filling, like all their bowls are. It had red onion, cabbage, Tom Yum Chicken, coriander, mint, carrot, toasted coconut and lemon olive oil dressing. Eating meat-free, I got the Tofu Boys which came with tofu, obviously, cucumber, radish, shallots and edamame with miso tahini dressing, tamari almonds and crispy shallots. So good. If you're thinking these images don't match the descriptions I'm giving you, you're right. These are the extras.


When you order, you'll be asked to choose your base which could be carb-laden with ingredients like brown rice, sushi rice, noodles and so on, or you could go carb-free and have cabbage as your base. Then you choose the bowl you'd like, be it Big Papi with tuna sashimi, Miso Salmon with cooked salmon fillet, and so on. You can also choose a warm bowl, and add the extras like a seaweed salad, extra protein, avocado, miso soup, additional veg and crunch and so on, and get your wasabi mayo drizzle, Japanese chilli flakes and have the fish seared for free.

I didn't go back today but I wish I had after a friend told me (jealous) that he went in and had the Shroomami, a plant-based special with mushrooms, and available for a limited time only, so get in early. Luckily it's only a 12 minute walk for me, hence I dare say, like Arnold Schwarzenegger, I'll be back, sooner than you can say Shroomami.
