Have you ever wanted to try something for the first time?
Libraries SA has instigated a series of events across July called "Firstival". This is the first time they have done this - making it the first Firstival 2013 and the range of activities on offer is amazingly wide and there is certainly something for everyone.
The public libraries across South Australia are offering these events, not only at library sites but also other public spaces, with a few things at each library, and the activities spread across the state. There are things to do, things to explore, things to experience, and people to meet.
The cost ranges from free to about $20, and the times are variable as well. While there are some activities for children, many of the activities are for all ages, so no matter how old you are, you are encouraged to try new things that are in the media and pop culture and that you may not have had the opportunity to get into, or even know what they actually are. Bookings are essential, so please make sure you have your spaces reserved beforehand.
There is a guidebook available at public libraries (not everything is in it, just a taste), or else you can
go to their website for a full list of events.
The activities have been split into a series of themes. Here's some of them and some of the activities available in each. However, like I said, please go online for a full run-down of everything on offer.

So, that is just a very small sampling of what is available during the month of July.
There really does appear to be something for everyone over the course of the month. No matter what your interests are, you will find at least one activity to suit. The added advantage is that it encourages people of all ages to rediscover the public libraries of South Australia.
I am a huge advocate of the public library system (yes, a couple of my books are available there for borrowing as well). Libraries nowadays are no longer just places to borrow books. They have audiobooks and some even have e-books available, there are local history sections, there are family history sections, there are computers for use, there are meeting rooms available, and there are even toys at some libraries to borrow.
And even more to the point, the staff that the public libraries in South Australia hire that I have interacted with have been really friendly and helpful. Some of the best customer service I've come across.
So, what are you doing this July?
