Rockhampton is surrounded by mountain ranges with picturesque creeks and bushland that make it an excellent place for mountain bikes. One of my favourite places for mountain bikes is as it has 33 trails to choose from.

HOW TO GET HERE
It is located around a15 minute drive from the Rockhampton City CBD. For the best access, go to the corner of German Street and Sunset Drive, North Rockhampton, just at the edge of Lyle Albert Dobbs Park. You can find a car park here. This car park is always busy, especially on weekends and holidays, early mornings and late afternoons. Two other access points can be found off Guthrie Street in Frenchville, and also towards the end of Sunset Drive in Norman Gardens (just after the bridge).

A LITTLE HISTORY
Going back to 1952, First Turkey had already been using cycling tracks for sports. Handmade mountain bike trails have existed at First Turkey since the 1990s.

TRAILS
For reference, here with suggested trails to do:
1. Beginner: head up Finley's to Turkey's Nest, descending Scrub Turkey, or go to Finley's then traverse across Wundali, then descend Jackhammer.

2. Intermediate rider: head up Finley's to Turkey's Nest, descending Wild Pig or go to Jackhammer to Ant's Next, descending Megatron (Flow Trail). You can also choose Jackhammer and then traverse across Wundali, descending Wild Pig or Scrub Turkey.

3. Advanced rider: head up Finley's to Turkey's Nest, descending Whitey or Think Tank or go to Jackhammer to Ant's Nest, descending K-9.

Full map signs of the park are located at the main trailhead and near the Guthrie Street entrance. You will also see them at each trail hub throughout the network, so you can easily find your way around.

WHAT TO EXPECT
The trails at First Turkey MTB Park are not only great for mountain bikes but a lot of people also use these trails as walking tracks. First Turkey Mountain Bike Reserve hugs the north-side suburbs of Norman Gardens and Frenchville, weaves past Moore's Creek then rises into the hills. In wet months, Moore's Creek fills from the surrounding hills, creating dozens of cascades and swimming holes.

You can find drinkable water taps located at the main German Street trailhead to refill your water bottles. A toilet is located inside the park alongside Moore's Creek. There are no shops on site so you will need to bring whatever supplies you need. Camping and vans are not permitted overnight at First Turkey. The park is open most days of the year, however, closes temporarily after heavy rain.
