Kids get to meet firefighters

When I was a primary school teacher back in the late 1980s health and safety lessons were seen as all important. There was always a lesson about how fire was a good servant but a bad master.

In today's crowded curriculum some of these lessons aren't drummed in like they used to be but in our fire-stricken country it is important to get these important safety messages across to kids.

A fun way to do this is at the Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens during the coming school holidays. There is a session with firefighters where they teach kids how firefighers protect themselves.

Kids dote on firetrucks and there will one in attendance which the kids can see in operation. There will also be lots of knowledge imparted on fire safety in the Australian bush.

The session is suitable for 6-12 year olds and will be held on
Wednesday 22 January between 10 - 11am. The cost is $7. For bookings and enquiries phone (03) 5990 2200.

As well as the session there is plenty to do in the park which is a popular place with families. There is a fantastic bushland area for families called Woodland Picnic Area. It includes grassed areas for ball games, a bicycle track, free barbecue facilities and a kid's playground.

Another chance to find out about fire safety is through the MFB. Traditionally these sessions were always held at Eastern Hill Fire Station in East Melbourne. Kids would get to hold the powerful hose (with a bit of assistance), sit in the fire engine and learn about fire safety. You could tell the firefighters enjoyed the adoration from the youngsters as well.
