Some friends and I took our budding young artists to Fired! Ceramic Cafe in Joondalup. The idea is kids (and sometimes their parents too) choose a ceramic item to paint - an animal figurine, a plate, a Christmas ornament or even a garden gnome - paint it, leave it to get glossed and cooked in the kiln, then pick it up and show it off.
There's a big range of things to paint at Fired! Ceramic Cafe
Yes, the painting gets a bit messy when your kids are little. But the paints are non-toxic and wash off little hands and out of clothes easily enough. And the staff don't mind when you make a bit of a mess on the table. In fact, I think they quite expect it.
Don't worry if your kids tend to slap paint everywhere without too much thought (I really wanted to help out and fix a few bits... okay, I admit it - I did). The end result once it's all shiny and cooked looks great. Even when it's not all nice and evenly painted. Here are some pieces fresh out of the oven.
Fired! isn't cheap though. The medium-sized animal figurines were $16 and the bigger figurines are $30. There's also a $5 studio fee per painter but if you 'like' the business on Facebook you can get that half price.
You can also have birthday parties at Fired! or do workshops and school holiday activities. And remember it's a cafe too, so you can enjoy a coffee while the kids paint.
There's generally a week turn around between painting your masterpiece and being able to pick it up. Find Fired! on Winton Road in Joondalup. Worth a visit.
