Ever wanted to be firefighter, well here's your chance
Be a firefighter for a day
I love seeing the wonder in my kid's eyes whenever they see the sirens blare and the lights flashing as the fire engine speeds to where they are needed.
The public is invited to see what it's like to be a firefighter during 2014 Fire and Rescue NSW Fire Station Open Day on May 17. Fire Stations across Sydney will be open from 10am to 2pm with sausage sizzles on offer for families and visitors visiting the local firefighters.
This day is a perfect excuse to have the kids dressed up as firefighters and act out their "Fireman Sam" tendencies.
The first fire station built was in Marrickville and opened in 1886. The City of Sydney Fire Station on Castlereagh Street was built in 1888 and remains an example of Victorian free classical architecture drawing on the features from the London Metropolitan Fire Brigade. This Fire Station retains the 1887 building fašade, engine bays, front rooms and main staircase with the new station adjacent completed in 2003 incorporates purpose built engine bays and state of the art firefighter's facilities.
On the Open Day the Fire and Rescue vehicles are parked out front demonstrating rescues with the cherry picker. A range of free activities are on offer including firefighting demonstrations, station tours and fire safety presentations. The kids are able to hop into the fire engines to discover and explore the world of firefighters. The firefighters also give a tour of the vehicles and tools used, something that looks like the "jaws of life" and it's good to see the kids on their best behaviour rather than imitating naughty Norman Price.
The highlight of the day for the kids was holding the different hoses and being able to release the lever and feel the power of the water surging through. This was the only time they were speechless and wanted to have more than one go of holding the hose.
You are also be able to donn the uniform and fire the hose. The Open Day is fun for all the family.
