A taste sensation that will have you returning for more
If you happen to be visiting Eumundi and you have a bit of a sweet tooth or if good quality food is your "thing" - do yourself a favour and pop into "Fiona's Fancies." A dear little cafe, with a couple of indoor tables, this cafe is simply overflowing with home made goodies all made fresh on the premises using free range eggs, organic chicken etc. This is one secret cafe that can't remain that way for much longer.
Located up the top of town next to the chemist, Fiona has been busily creating her works of art in cakes and pastries for the past 3 years. Her background's as a pastry chef (she trained in Sydney) and its quite evident Fiona is one experienced lady. She's worked under Luke Mangan, Sydney's "Hilton" and also, Lindt Chocolate itself. No wonder so many of Fiona's fancy cakes are laden with Lindt. It makes for some serious yum.
I had eaten once before at Fiona's and fell in love with her toasted bagels. Let me tell you about them ... Bangalow ham, (and I don't even like ham), swiss cheese, roma tomoato, mustard aoili and fresh rocket, but there's also a vegetarian option, with cream cheese, roasted zucchini, capsicum & mushrooms along with caramelised onion and baby spinach. Mouth watering stuff. At $7.90 ($1. extra for gluten free) they're a popular item among her growing band of customers.
I fully intended to buy another bagel but as I walked in, I spotted what I thought was a dying breed - an actual home made pie. A pie with that lovely fluffy uneven pastry top. A pie that looked just the way Mum used to make. It was an organic chicken, corn & mushroom pie. I never thought I'd call a pie 'exquisite' but there is no other word for it. It simply melted in my mouth, the pastry was sublime and the contents - delicious. It's now become my new 'favourite' ....
Fiona also has an extensive range of amazing cakes from lemon curd tarts ($3.50), vanilla bean cup cakes ($3.50) and the pear, ginger and Lindt chocolate cup cake which is gluten free. See below ($4.80). Now that's a work of art in my book.
There's also a lemon myrtle cheese cake and a large arrangement of colourful macarons with natural fillings as well as, you guessed it - Lindt chocolate. Fiona makes birthday and wedding cakes to order and described her specialty cake - a liqueur soaked 3 layered sponge with a creamy Lindt chocolate cream on each layer topped with a Lindt chocolate ganache brushed with a fine gold trim. How does it get any better than that?
Fiona uses the ever popular "Little Cove" roasted coffee and says it is mighty popular. Little Cove are also fortunate enough to have some of Fiona's cakes on offer and the only other cafe on the coast that also sells Fiona's cakes is "The Vello Project" in Mooloolabah. If your down that part of the coast - check them out.
