Everyone loves a great movie that features the iconic backdrop of the most romantic city on earth, Paris. Most of us as we get lost in the movie, we do not consider the fact that the film's cast and crew never stepped foot on Parisian soil. Therefore, the following is a listing of movies that are set in Paris, yet filmed elsewhere.

The Bourne Identity (2002)

This story follows the journey of a man recover his memory. Upon the pieces of his mental puzzle coming together, he discovers that he is actually a skillful weapon of mass destruction. Although the movie seemingly takes you through a wild ride through Paris for a moment, the movie was filmed in the following countries: Czech Republic, Germany and the United States.

Hugo (2011)

Although the film is based in 1930's Paris, it was actually filmed in the United States. Therefore, as moviegoers followed the adventures of Hugo the orphan who lived in the walls of a train station, he was actually treading on American soil the entire time.

Moulin Rouge! (2001)

We all love the colourful tale of a poet that falls earnestly in love with a beautiful courtesan. As we watch as the jealousy ridden duke covets, it never occurs that the misshapen love triangle was filmed in Australia and the United States.

The Phantom of the Opera (2004)

Everyone knows the tale of the love between a disfigured musical genius and a young soprano. Even though we are convinced that the Phantom lives beneath the Paris Opera House, the movie was actually filmed in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Oopri (2016)

This movie is centred around a billionaire quadriplegic and his male caregiver. The remake of the French film "Intouchables (2011)" was actually filmed in Belgrade.

An American in Paris (1951)

Everyone loves a good love story, especially one that involves a trio of friends struggling to find work in the city of love. This is a story that draws the viewer deeper in as it becomes clear that two of the friends have fallen in love with the same woman. No one ever notices that the movie was filmed, in its entirety, at the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios lot in Culver City, California.

In Conclusion

Many may be wondering why movies such as "Ratatouille" was not included in the list. Animated films are not shot on location at all, it's fairly clear to the audience that the voice over actors were now flown to Paris for the movie. Although filming a movie within the "City of Love" can be pricey, there are hundreds that have been filmed there over the years.

In more recent years, movie makers have simply opted to film portions of their movies in Paris with remaining scenes filmed elsewhere. This tactic for financial savings is why many movies were excluded from the list due to the fact that their backdrop [in part] was actually Paris. There are a number of lists out there that have incorrect movies listed, beware…but also sit back and enjoy a great tale set in Paris.
