The 51st Anniversary of Fijian Independence from the British will be marked in Brisbane with a banquet dinner followed by a day of cultural dances, ethnic food, and sporting activities.

Friday, 8 October: Charity banquet dinner
This year, the celebrations kick off with an inaugural three-course banquet dinner. Highlights of the evening include a traditional Fijian "sevusevu" (welcome ceremony), cultural dance performances by Matana, Rako Pasefika and Dance with Anum. DJ Amitt will get everyone on the dance floor.

Dinner organiser Kathy Jaeger said ticket sales will raise funds for two existing charities helping the most vulnerable people in Fiji during the Covid-19 pandemic. In particular, food hampers are currently being distributed to needy families by Caritas Fiji and new mothers in maternity units are receiving an essentials pack of items such as cloth nappies, baby clothing, toiletries and sanitary pads through the International Women's Association (Fiji) Cloth Nappy Project ( https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/international-womens-association-fiji-needs-you ).

Saturday, 9 October: Fiji Day cultural activities
The day after the charity dinner, there will be an exciting line-up of 16 teams playing through the day in a fast-moving seven-a-side rugby tournament, kava stalls (a chance to try out the traditional Fijian drink), food stalls, cultural entertainment, tug-of-war competitions, and children's activities (face painting, rides, games).
