There's Lots of Fun in Store at the Fete.

Excitement is brewing in the heart of Fig Tree Pocket. Stalls are being prepared. Rides and entertainers are being booked. Donations for a white elephant stall are rolling in to the coordinators' office. Why? After a four-year hiatus, the Fig Tree Pocket State School Fete, Winterfest is back!

I spoke to one of the two coordinators, Jane Burton Smith, about the free event which is taking place on Sunday the 11th of June at the school grounds. She said, "The kids are super excited because we haven't had one in so long!"

Who can blame them? I'm a grown up and I'm excited about it. There's always so much to enjoy and this one is going all out to impress fete fans.

The Fete is Called 'Winterfest' 2017.

Jane told me from 10am onward there will be a wide variety of food stalls, a silent auction, a fantastic raffle and games. Plus, there will be a coffee cart for the grown ups, art and crafts, games and a student art action. Past students and teachers are encouraged to attend and write their names on the school's timeline wall. It will be a great opportunity to catch up with past classmates and teachers too.

Of course the event will be very family orientated. There are a variety of rides coming to side show alley, but Jane told me they have made special effort to ensure there are ones for the little kids to ride with their parents as well as ones to please the bigger kids.

[p]"All through the day we've got different sorts of entertainment," Jane said. She went on to reveal a few of the acts they're hoping to confirm for their line-up, but as they're not locked in I ought not publicise any as yet. I can reveal she's hoping to have a good selection of music, dance and culture on show.

Superb Stalls and Lots of Yummy Treats.

Fig Tree Pocket State School is a small school in Brisbane's western suburbs. At any time, enrolments consist of between 350 and 522 children. As such, it's quite a feat to organise and run an event of this size. Jane said it wouldn't be going ahead without so many great parents and students donating items and volunteering their time.

"That's why we haven't had one for so long," she admitted, "Its hard to get parent involvement in such a big event."

This year, the parents, teachers and the students are making a massive effort to get the fete up and running. Each grade has been allocated a stall for which they're responsible.

"We've even got one of our classes doing a gluten free, organic, sugar free stall

for anyone with allergies," Jane enthused.

Stalls and Grades

It's so Good to See Students Involved in the Stalls.

Jane said, "We've got a big book stall. It's mainly going to have kids' books for sale," adding, "We will also have a white elephant stall with different categories of items one is sporting equipment, another is camping equipment and there will be a third (yet to be announced) category."

The fete is a major fundraiser for the school. The P and C puts a lot of money into the school and they're hoping this event will help with some bigger projects like putting a shelter up in the children's pick up area to protect them from harsh summer sun and rain.

"We're a small school," Jane lamented, "So we don't have the people power to do a lot of fundraising."

She's hoping the funds raised will help create better resources and support for their students.

She said, "We would love to welcome families from all over Brisbane to come to our little school for Winterfest 2017."
