You might never have heard of but once you've tasted the food, you'll certainly be talking about it. This beautiful beachside restaurant provides for dining and drinking inside and out. Housed in the Hughes Heritage Home, which was built in 1913, it maintains the building's character while offering modern dining facilities. The building, originally called Carinya, was built for Harold Hughes and members of his family lived there until 2001. Harold Hughes was one of Australia's early surveyors. He travelled to the Kimberley in 1883 to map out Broome.

Following some rave reviews from a close friend, my husband and I headed off to for lunch. Bookings were recommended - this is a popular and well-patronised restaurant. We sat indoors but a wall of windows and glass doors to the back verandah still accorded us great views past one of the amazing fig trees on the property and across Westernport Bay. We were greeted by the friendliest of staff, and the service lived up to all expectations.

offers an all-day breakfast. I must admit I was tempted, really tempted, by the Red Velvet Waffle, which the menu describes as 'House-made red velvet waffle served with mascarpone cream cheese, Canadian maple syrup, seasonal fruit and flaked chocolate.' That alone was enough to get my mouth watering, but I had seen photos of this wondrous delight on their Facebook page, and it was hard to pass by. My husband convinced me that sweets alone was perhaps not an ideal lunch.

For those of you who can't pass by the breakfast menu, some of the other delights on offer are Buttermilk Scones, Sweet Corn Fritters, Sautéed Greens and Smoked Salmon, along with the normal breakfast fare.

Before I move on to the main meals, I have to tell you about the Brunch Tower. The people on the table next to us ordered this, and it is a tower; three levels of delights, designed for two. I will not spoil it by telling you what's included, but if you really need to know, check their website for the menu.

For our main meal, we both settled on Lemon Pepper Squid. This is one of my favourite dishes. I've ordered this in countless towns, but never has it been as exquisitely served or tasted as good. It was tender, sat upon a bed of refreshing delights and was surrounded by a mouth-watering dressing. The menu describes it as 'Lightly fried squid seasoned with lemon pepper with roquette, apple, cucumber, chilli, lemon apple dressing, garlic aioli, fresh lemon and crispy fried shallots.'

There are many delights on the main menu, including Pork Belly Bao Buns, Beef Ragu Pappardelle, and Pad Thai. They also have a burger menu and, of course, the children have not been forgotten; there is a kid's menu too. And if you really want to treat yourself, look at the tarts. I couldn't resist - I had the choc mint tart. Fig and the Bay is licensed and has a generous drinks menu, suitable for both adults and children. I found the prices to be reasonable and less than expected for the quality.

If you're worried about stacking on the calories, take heart. offers direct access to walking trails and the beach. My husband and I set off on the trail to Coronet Bay. It was a pleasant, well sheltered walk with an abundance of bird life and several access points to the beach. There are seats along the way and we sat for a while at the edge of a river where we watched little pied cormorants sunning themselves.
