Warlow is sensational in Fiddler
International phenomenon,
Fiddler on the Roof has captured the heart of audiences around the world for over 51 years. Opening night of
Fiddler on the Roof in Melbourne at the ethereal Princess Theatre was sensational and included an array of wonderful hits including, "Tradition," "Matchmaker Matchmaker" and "Sunrise Sunset".
Set in a Jewish Village in 1905, the beloved musical is about tradition and dealing with inescapable change. The central story revolves around a struggling milkman Tevye (Anthony Warlow), his wife Golde (Sigrid Thorton) and his five daughters. Tevye tries to pressure his eldest daughter Tzeitel (Teagan Wouters), into an arranged marriage but is met with defiance and opposition. Although the notion of arranged marriage feels somewhat antiquated nowadays; it was a time-honoured tradition in 1905. Some of the underlying themes throughout the production are religion, genders roles, interfaith marriages and eroding traditions.
The last time I saw
Fiddler on the Roof was in 1998 when Topol captivated and charmed audiences at the Regent Theatre. Years on, Anthony Warlow was outstanding as Tevye and won the audience over with his pitch perfect performance and comedic timing. The Yiddish humour throughout the musical helped to soften some of the heavier storylines and was welcomed by the audience. Nicki Wendt was another standout performer as Yente, the matchmaker.
A talented ensemble helped to round out the production. One to look out for is Madeline Perrone who returned to Melbourne after back-to-back lead roles in New York.
Fiddler on the Roof has sustained longevity and was first performed at the Imperial Theatre in Broadway in 1964. Audiences loved the show along with the critics. Decades on, the story is still engaging and thus, the musical has been revived all over the world.
Overall, an outstanding and thought-provoking play that will leave you humming "Tradition" for days.
