Are you sitting at home wondering how to keep the boredom bugs at bay? Ring up some friends or just treat yourself to a fantastic meal at located in Parkdale's cute shopping strip.

For those who have never been to Parkdale, it is one if those outer Melbourne suburbs that has country town undertones. A sweet little town where everyone knows everything. A stone's throw from the beach, Parkdale has many hidden treasure troves of food.

I stumbled on Ficelle restaurant when I was going for an appointment. It was the beautiful raised courtyard that caught my eye then the menu choice on the window. Ficelle offers three menus - a lunch menu (Wednesday to Friday only) a dinner special (Monday to Wednesday only) and a standard menu.

The restaurant offers an extensive wine list, including dessert wines that accompany the desserts. To my amazement, the lunch menu offers two courses for $16.90 and the dinner specials two courses for $28 or three for $36. This I believe is very reasonable given today's standard main can cost anything between $16-$20.

With my daughter and pram in tow, I approached the front entrance which is down brick path past the raised courtyard. I should add here that the front entry to Ficelle is not wheelchair friendly - there is a raised step into the restaurant. There are two eating areas and a small bar. One area at the time I was there was set for a private function, while the other area remained the standard 2-4 seat tables. Please note, if your just turning up without a booking, I'd recommend arriving at 12pm because this cosy restaurant soon fills up.

Entree course consisted of a bacon and onion tart, soup of the day, fish cakes or duck liver pate with apple jelly. My choice of the tart was most enjoyable, a smooth creamy slice of tart but probably more suited to the appetite of someone who enjoys heavy foods. The soup was serves with crusty buttered bread, on the day of my visit the soup was pumpkin which was smooth and light, with buttery pumpkin flavours and hints of curry spices.

The main courses for lunch caters for all tastes. There is even a good old stout, melt-in-the-mouth beef stew for those who like it's warmth and comfort and is served with mash potato. There is calamari served on a salad bed; the calamari is not coated and has been cooked to perfection. My choice was the fish which was battered in a light tempura batter that melted in the mouth. Accompanied by crunchy chips and a light garden salad. There was also a tartare sauce, but I felt it was a little too creamy and not enough bite.

If you still had room and fancied a third course, don't be afraid to ask for the dessert menu. Each lunchtime dessert costs $6 and you won't be able to resist once you've seen the choices. Chocolate mousse, crème brûlée, trio of sorbet and profiteroles.

The mousse as expected is rich and filling topped with a berry sauce, sliced strawberries and a slice of shortbread. The crème brûlée came with a firm toffee on the top however, I was disappointed in how chewy it was. Nevertheless the strong accents of vanilla highlight this dish. It was accompanied with a mixture of stewed berries and apples and a slice of shortbread.

I would say the serving sizes were sensible for the time of day, not to little and not to much. The restaurant definitely has a French feel which is hidden within their foods. If your ever in Parkdale, this is certainly one place you'll regret passing and once you've tired Ficelle once, I bet I'll see you there a few more times.
