Tis the season when our thoughts wander towards all things festive. Get in early and prep yourself towards a more sustainable Christmas. Your creative output is as limitless as your imagination. You can basically look around your home and garden and find things that can be transformed with a bit of thought and creativity. Here are a couple of event dates with the Stonnington Library and Information Service to help you out.

Bring holiday cheer to your home with a natural Christmas Wreath . This is a free event, however, bookings are required for every attendee (bookings open 10am on 1 Nov 2024) for Saturday 30 Nov 2024 from 10.30am to 12.30pm at the Phoenix Park Library, 30 Rob Roy Road, Malvern East. The Urban Nanna will guide you to make a wreath using natural materials. At the end of the workshop, you will take home a gorgeous Christmas wreath. This is a beginner-friendly workshop for adults. All materials are supplied. Bargain; free, materials supplied, and you get to take home the goods.

There's a second event on Wed 4 December 2024 from 6-7.30pm for those of you who can't make it to a day event. Again, free, but must book. See here for details . Do note this is at a different venue and will be held at the Malvern Library, 1255 High St, Malvern. If you have no time to attend, there's always 'google' - to be guided to a plethora of ideas to decorate in a planet-friendly manner at Christmas time, instead of heading for the tidal wave of plastic decorations hitting shop shelves.

  • Recycle some of the tinsels and plastic baubles of years gone by that you've collected to reuse, and decorate using them with joyful abandon.
  • Try some dried orange slice garlands that smell amazing
  • Cook up some zero-waste salt dough stars for Christmas decorations - they look amazing on a tree or used in your gift wrapping
  • If you're handy at crochet, crochet yourself some Christmas tree baubles
  • Origami decorations if you're a dab hand at it, using old wrapping paper, colourful magazine pages etc
  • Saved glass bottles as candle holders with a touch of foliage or even a salt dough star at the neck
  • Paperbag stars; orange peel garland; popcorn and cranberry garland; pinecone garland; and perhaps even gum nuts; rosemary wreaths; toilet roll tube snowflakes - you get the idea.

  • By now your mind is probably churning with a few great ideas yourself. They're also fun projects you can involve the whole family in, a childhood memory to remember forever. I still remember the popcorn garlands I used to sit and thread with my mother, so go ahead and create those special moments.
