A little bit of what you fancy
Planning a big night out at Fringe World? Kickstart the fun at the early evening Festival Spectacular show! From the moment mistress of ceremonies Bernadette Byrne rode her "man beasts" onto the stage to the lively accordion music played by Victor Victoria, I knew I was in the right place. Proudly presented by Twisted Vaudeville Circus, the Festival Spectacular offers a dazzling blend of comedy, acrobats, burlesque and more from award-winning local and international acts. Though the line-up may change, opening night was a variety show that the audience loved. Read on for some highlights.
First, a warning: if you're a shy type, sit way at the back because audience participation is part of the fun. Whether it's crawling on hands and knees (the man beasts) or being seduced by a half-man half-woman, be prepared for roars of laughter as the performers get up close and personal.
The show opened with a high energy dance routine by Kelly Ann Doll and Russell Bruner from Swingtime Variety, which transformed into a burlesque finish that was both artistic and acrobatic. As the show progressed burlesque fans of both sexes were well catered for with brilliant performances by 2014 Mr.Boylesque Charlie D Barkle and a spectacular finish by Bettie Bombshell plus others. Truly something for everyone.
Vaudevillian David Splatt had me in stiches with a Guns n Roses classic played on the musical saw, as did Canadian comedian Bryan O'Gorman with his observations about the difference between Cosmopolitan magazine and a trade school for sex (too rude to quote here but hilarious). The fiery acrobatic performance by Bronson Fox was another hit - definitely don't try this at home.
Throughout the show Bernadette and Victor Victoria (both of East End Cabaret) kept the audience well amused with a mixture of music, comedy and the aforementioned audience participation.

The Festival Spectacular is a great show on its own as well as a showcase of other Fringe delights. Five stars!
Note: the Festival Spectacular is an 18-plus event at a licensed venue with a Fringe UV rating of Hot. Hot shows can be dark, edgy, possibly sexy...always enjoyable.
