The Festival of the Sea is a family fun day held Easter Saturday at the Duyfken Boatshed, Princess Royal Drive on the Albany waterfront.
Here you will be able to eat local seafood in abundance.
At the Duyfken Boatshed, you will be able to enjoy a range of nautical-themed stalls with food and wine, along with amazing entertainment from local musicians.
Children are also welcome to take part in special activities, such as the exciting boat building competition and race, and whaleboat rowing.
There will be wine, beer, celebrity chef - Don Hancey, cooking, competitions, the Old Gaffers, gaff rigged boats, St Ayles skiffs, live music and more!
All this will happen on Easter Saturday which is the 31st March, 2018 from 10 am to 4.00 pm.
This festival was first held in 2008 and has progressed since then into a fabulous, fun-filled day for all. WAFIC (Western Australia's peak industry body representing the interests of the commercial fishing, pearling and aquaculture sectors) is a sponsor of the Albany Festival of the Sea, which is an annual event that celebrates the contribution of the seafood sector to Albany and other Western Australian south coast communities.
Albany Maritime Foundation and M&B Building Products will be running the "Build a Boat Competition", and there will be cash prizes of $1000 for the first in a final race; $250 for being second in a final race, $250 for the best boat and $200 for the popular choice.
The Festival of the Sea is conducted by the Albany Maritime Foundation [AMF], a not for profit organisation who service the Great Southern area of WA.
This festival is now considered to be one of the more important events on the Great Southern tourist calendar. It has had large crowds of between 6000 and 8000 people annually, and each year, there are more products being showcased, and the events are popular with locals and a large number of tourists.
Part of this event is the highly popular boat building competition, where teams are given space and material to construct a craft during the festival and at the end of the day they race it around a course. This competition combines skill and ingenuity and the results are often hilarious and surprising - a festival highlight!
The competition is open to anyone, whether they are professionals, students, families, or friends up to 5 people. Every team will get the same materials, but each team will have to provide their own tools, including work tables and/or horses. These tools can be hand and/or battery powered only - no mains powered, ignition or air tools will be allowed, and power outlets for charging batteries will be provided.
It may be necessary to race more than once depending on the number of teams that are there on the day, and the course length is 250-300 metres.
Construction will be from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm and the on water event will commence at 3.30 pm.
