Sun 15 Feb 2015

On 15 February, twenty kilometres north-east of Geelong in the picturesque rural township of Drysdale, a festival will take place showcasing the art of glass in all it's stunning forms.

View and purchase all things glass on this jam-packed day, which includes glass masterclasses, demonstrations of glass-working techniques, silent auctions of items hand-made by exhibitors, and an award ceremony, all amongst a range of unique art and craft exhibitor stalls. Lose yourself amongst the thousands of people expected to attend the festival, from excited locals to visitors to this delightful neighbourhood.

Entry is free and this year will be bigger and better, with the following highlights for everyone:

Glass Expo & demonstrations

With over 50 local and interstate exhibitors, the exhibition is a major feature of the festival. Glass artists and glass suppliers display and sell a very wide and diverse range of high quality glass items, all handmade by glass artists.
Expect to see an array of types of glass including plates, jewellery, fused and slumped glass, mosaics, beadweaving, leadlight windows, splashbacks, homewares and many more displays.

Several of the exhibitors also offer demonstrations in their particular glass art medium. Specialist displays and demonstrations from community groups with expertise and interest in glass are also scheduled.

During the day watch 'Glass on Film' - short films about glass art, craft and industry and each hour there will be a chance to win glass collectibles.

Raffle and silent auction

Necklaces, homewares, hampers of glass, pendants and Blue Wren Glass Art will go under the hammer at the Festival of Glass raffle and silent auction. Plus a new addition in 2015 will see the auctioning of several items from the glass artists exhibiting at the festival.

Glass-art Awards competition 2015

During the festival, winners of the 2015 Festival of Glass Drysdale Glass Art Awards and The Art of Recycled Glass award will be announced. This is a showcase for glass artists in all media - wearable glass art, non-wearable glass art and photography. Think original jewellery glass art, sculptural glass art, functional glass art and photography with glass as its subject. The entries are judged by a panel and have to meet specific criteria for originality, use of colour, sophistication and technical execution.

Food and drink

A sausage sizzle will be provided by the local Clifton Springs Lyons Club, alongside coffee by Bean Cravin and refreshing Timboon Ice-cream. There are also several local cafes, a pub and restaurants within walking distance of the venue. For lunch or dinner, it might be worth checking out The Drysdale Hotel , with a new menu is serving up Louisiana hot wings, eggplant parmigiana and Wagyu beefburgers.

Free glass workshops

In the week following the Glass Expo, there will be opportunities to take workshops with several of the festival's glass artists.Become a glass-worker yourself, with workshops on fused glass, sculptural hot glass, flamework and beadweaving.

See the festival web site for details of dates, times and places.

Glass Masterclass by Mark Elliot

Also after the expo, renowned Sydney-based glass artist Mark Elliot will run a one day workshop on flamework (16 February) and a three-day class on glass sculpting (17th to 19th February).

Mark's recent work is mostly flame-work sculpture and has been known to interpret live meditative music into flame work in order to convey synesthetic colour, form and texture. Mark also enjoys doing one-on-one teaching, running workshops and doing public flame work demonstrations. To get involved in Mark's workshops bookings are essential. You can book here .
