The round trip via ferry from Palm Beach to Bobbin Head is one of the most picturesque in the Sydney Region.

It takes in the full grandeur of the Hawkebury River, a series of waterways even more spectacular than it's smaller cousin to the south, Sydney Harbour.

Somehow the Hawkebury River has evaded most development, with much of it preserved by national park, and looking much like Sydney Harbour must have done before 1788.

The trip starts from Palm Beach wharf at 11am.

Then, as the ferry website states:

"Heading away from the northern beaches across majestic Pittwater into Broken Bay you will pass the penguin colony of Lion Island and skirt West Head as the bush and sandstone lined shore of the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park looms closer. Meanwhile, Barrenjoey Head, the lighthouse, Palm Beach and the Pacific Ocean glimmer in the background as fishermen and sailors smile and wave as we pass."

You've got to love a good waving sailor, especially with glimmering ocean in the background.

After about 2 hours of cruising you'll arrive at Bobbin Head where you get an hour to lounge about and picnic, before hopping back on the Ferry for the return trip.

There are also a number of walking tracks nearby, but make sure you are back in time for the ferry departure.

The ferry tickets cost $40 for adults, and $20 for children which is not too bad considering you get 4 hours of cruising.

Here is the ferry website. Tickets are purchased from the crew on board the ferry.

Here is a map of the route.

Remember to bring water and pack your own picnic and snacks for the trip, although there is a kiosk at Bobbin Head.

It easiest to drive to Palm Beach Wharf, however it is possible to catch a bus. Consult the 131500 website for your best route.
Why? A delightful trip and a very relaxing way to spend a day.
