The Swan Valley east of Perth is home to fine food, stunning scenery and famous wine. It is also home to the best beer in Australia over the last four years.

Feral Brewery is nestled right at the base of the Perth Hills in Baskerville. Despite being just half an hour away from the CBD there isn't the slightest hint of the hustle and bustle life that plagues city folk. Everything from the slow-flowing Susannah Brook to the large expanses of dry grassy fields, gives off those distinctive country vibes.

The iconic brewery offers something that is becoming increasingly unique amongst Perth drink venues too. They haven't gone for cosmopolitan, modern, chic, stylish or any of those glamour words flaunted by many inner city joints. Feral is a down to earth traditional Aussie pub; a place where men can act like men should and women don't feel the need to wear 10 inch heels.

This mentality is reflected in the building itself. The solid wooden building is 'complemented' by an unhidden tin roof, wooden decking, thick mooring rope and an unsealed carpark. Feral Brewery take pride in their motto: undomesticated yet sophisticated.

I could ramble on forever about how much I love that they've chosen to buck the "hip" trend, but there is much more about this brewery than just its looks. There is beer and food too (shock horror)!

Well, anyone who knows anything about good beer can write an essay explaining Feral's nation-beating beer. At 5.8% ABV the Hop Hog is a bold, flavoursome IPA packed full of American hops. It's easily one of the most distinctive brews on the market, hence it's huge success.

All up Feral rotates through around 15 different beers ranging from traditional lagers to German sours, there is no brewing line these guys won't cross. They even have a boring beer which - and this is a direct quote from the menu - is "for those who can't hack the true Hop Hog experience... Take a teaspoon of cement and harden up, princess!" Now how many businesses do you know that willingly bag their own product?

The food menu is no slouch either. All the usual pub suspects are available as well as some more interesting options including Kangaroo Saltimbocca, crab & lemon croquettes and rabbit burger. All of this is of course much higher quality than usual. Fridays are the best day for food as they have a $20 meal and drink special - usually a choice between chicken parmi or one other meal.

Feral Brewery really is one of those places that can completely change your perception of beer. For those who have only consumed the mass produced stuff, or those who aren't fans of the holy nectar, take a trip to Feral before giving up hope. For those like myself who love beer, Feral brewery is your mecca.
