Ever wondered how to make your own felt? Contemporary felt artisan, Wendy Bailye conducts monthly workshops from her secluded studio in the Samford Valley - teaching beginners to advanced artists how to create felt masterpieces.

I attended Wendy's one day workshop with four others and we each ended up with our own unique pieces - someone made silk/felt flowers, someone made a bag, someone made toys, another a scarf and I made a wall hanging.

[ADVERT]The actual felting process is simple, requiring only wool, water, detergent and, of course, patience. After choosing just the right colors from Wendy's vast rainbow selection of wool, we began laying out a design, tuft by tuft, which took some time to get just right. At this point we stopped for a shared morning tea on Wendy's bushland verandah, a great excuse for more chatting.

Next step was to drown the wool design in soapy water and roll it all into a sausage. The repeated rolling action enables the wool to "felt" together, to create a unified piece of fabric. Once you have understood thebasic technique of felting, you can make hats, shoes, booties, dresses, bowls, anything really.
