It's knot as hard as it looks
Did you know that the word 'macrame' is believed to come from a thirteenth-century Arabic word, migramah, meaning 'fringe'? And did you know that you can try your hand at this decorative craft at Biome very soon?
Macrame involves knotting string in set patterns to produce a textile item for decorative purposes. If you're not immediately familiar with it, think of those knotted-yarn plant hangers you've probably seen. There are lots of other ways to put macrame techniques to use, and on Saturday, 14 September, you can make a gorgeous feather wallhanging at a Biome workshop.
The workshop will be held at the Biome Collective in Paddington from 10 am to 1 pm. The $65 fee includes all the tools and materials necessary, and on the day you'll also receive 10% off purchases in the Biome Paddington store.
Your macrame teacher will be Nancy George, who runs her own small creative business in Brisbane called Knotting Naked. Nancy makes an amazing range of home and personal items from macrame and crochet, and you can see more of her work on Instagram (@knotting.naked). Nancy loves to show people how to combine a low-waste life with creativity and have fun along the way!
Even if you don't feel you're very crafty, you'll surprise yourself. Macrame is a simple craft, but it's lots of fun and the results can be stunning. At the Biome workshop, you'll make three separate feathers and assemble them into your wallhanging. And having learnt some basics, you might just want to explore further on your own at home.

The Biome Collective is on Latrobe Street, Paddington, and is wheelchair-accessible. Some car parking is available behind the store, and bus routes stop right nearby. The Collective is a safe and inclusive space where everyone is welcome (but please note that the workshop is not suitable for anyone under 12 years of age).
Biome's Feather Macrame Wallhanging Workshop is only a week away and places are definitely limited. So jump online and book now through the Biome website, so you don't miss out!
