Please don't mention the war

It is really hard to beat this for a top night out. I've attended the show with all kinds of grumpy people and before long they are beaming and happy chappies. Basil Faulty and Co. are bound to turn anyone's frown upside-down.

The company started in Brisbane in 1997. It has proved so popular that it is now touring the world, in fact this year it will perform in 20 countries.

Even though this is dinner with theatre forget about concepts of theatre restaurants where you watch a show on a stage. Instead the actors are all around you, waiting on you, chatting to you and making you laugh.

The evening starts when you are standing around waiting to be lead to your table. Basil calls your name with all kinds of funny lines thrown in. In my experience this is a bit of a testing ground where the actors see who is ripe for a bit of fun and then they return over and over again to that person or table during the night because they know where they can get a rise.

As an example, the German man who said to Basil "Don't mention the war" when he was being seated almost became part of the show.

Tip: Ask for a table near the centre of the room because this is where most of the antics are.

We had a table at the back and tended to be a bit out of it at times. Although I must say that the actors go around to every table for a chat.

My banter went something like this.

To Manuel " This chair is about to break could I please have another one. I'd hate to fall down and break my coccyx."

Manuel scampered off to get me another chair.

I went to give him a hug as a thank you because he's just so god dam small and cute.

He jumped back screaming. " I think you're a man stay away from me."

Well I did say I had a coccyx.

Much of the humour for the night comes from Manuel, who just as in the famous TV series, takes everything so literally.

"Wait on table" means just that, with his shiny shoes at the same level as your soup.

"Roll on plate" finds Manuel shooting across the floor on a plate.

The John Cleese look alike who plays Basil Faulty is just as funny with his bulging eyes and funny walks.

And of course, the only one who can control him is his wife Sybil with her ear splitting "Ba.......sil!

The show goes for two hours over your three course meal which is generally a 70s style fare. We had pumpkin soup, mushy peas and so on. Our meal was excellent but it might just depend on where you go.

It is very much the experience of being in an English seaside hotel and being waited on by such oddball characters. It's hilarious.

There are a number of shows on in Brisbane at the following venues. All shows start at 6.30 with pre-dinner drinks, with the dinner an entertainment (or should that be the dinner that is the entertainment at 7.00pm.) Highly recommended.
