For some reason when I think of Dad I think of beer. He's also partial to a slice of pizza. With that in mind I have collated a list of some of the best places to take him for Father's Day, along with some other interesting events and functions happening on Sunday, September 1.
The Smiling Samoyed Brewery is a nice place to spend a relaxing Sunday. There is a selection of craft beer, delicious bar snacks and sometimes even live music. We celebrated a milestone birthday for my dad there, and have been back several times since, and had a great time. Then it was known as the Myponga Brewery. The name has presumably been changed by the new owners in honour of the fluffy white dogs that happily laze around the premises.
The brewery is found behind the Myponga Markets on Main South Road. It is open on Father's Day from 11 am. The Facebook Facebook page is the best place to go for information while the website is under construction.
Another popular brewery (at least with my dad, who declares it to be one of the best) is the Goodieson Brewery. The cellar door/brewing shed is located on Sand Road at McLaren Vale and is open from 11 am until 5.30 pm. Visit the website and Facebook page for more information.
While in McLaren Vale, head to Oscars for a delicious slice of gourmet pizza. The Mediterranean inspired restaurant on Main Road is open for lunch, dinner and take away. Meals are well priced and well worth it. The website and Facebook page have more details.
If your dad prefers sea views and a walk along the beach, Deep Blue Café on Moana Esplanade is also known for great pizzas that range in price from $18 to $24. You can dine in or take away but whatever you do, be sure to get some garlic bread too - so good! Deep Blue Café is open from 8am until 8pm on Sundays. For more information, head to the website and Facebook page.
There are many Father's Day functions occurring around Adelaide. Utopia @ Waterfall Gully is hosting a Heart Starter Breakfast for $45 per person from 8am until 10.30am, and Lunch Fit for Your King is $69 per person from 12 noon until 2.30 pm. Places will fill quickly, so visit the website for all the details and book soon.
Meanwhile, Glen Ewin Estate on Lower Hermitage Road in Houghton has a special Winter Warmer lunch planned for Father's Day. The Indian banquet will be held from 12 noon until 4 pm and costs $35 per person. Bookings are essential, so visit the website for more information and to secure your table.
At the National Wine Centre, on the corner of Botanic and Hackney Roads, there is a four course Father's Day luncheon accompanied by great wine. It starts at 12 noon and costs $80 for adults, $50 for young adults and a kids menu is available for $15. Visit the website for booking information and to view the tempting menu.
To celebrate Father's Day, the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia is holding a steak and seafood buffet at 12 noon in the Horizons function room. It is situated on Lady Gowrie Drive at North Haven. The meal costs $49 per person (with a complimentary beer on arrival for dad) or $20 for kids aged 2 to 12 years. Bookings are essential, visit the website for more information.
If you are looking for something more active and charitable, you can participate in the national Big Red Walk together to support Kidney Health Australia. Dress in red and walk or run the track from Elder Park. The family fun day starts at 9am and after the walk there is a free barbecue and entertainment for all participants. Registrations can be made from the website and cost $10 (kids free).
The 157th Gawler Show is on Saturday, August 31 and Sunday, September 1, 2013. There will be rides, games, entertainment, animals and special Father's Day activities and competitions. It is held at the Gawler Showground on Nixon Terrace. Tickets cost $15 for adults, $13 concession, $8 for children under 16 and children under 5 are free. Head to the website for more details.
Sticky Rice Cooking School has A Taste of Vietnam class on Father's Day that might be nice to do together. It is located on Old Mount Barker Road at Stirling. The class runs from 2pm until 6pm and costs $145 per person. Bookings, vouchers and further information can be found at the website.
As for gift ideas, FreemanX Experience claims to be Australia's leading gift experience provider. It offers lots of exciting gift vouchers that can be purchased online and are perfect for dads - think glider flights, rally driving, sky diving, hot air balloon rides, beer tasting, and much more.
If your dad prefers something a bit more relaxing, then Endota Day Spa has a Bloke gift voucher that can be purchased for $110 online or in store. It entails a foot scrub and manly massage and is redeemable from eight locations in South Australia.
