I've always associated Fatboys in the Valley with late night, greasy fare after some boozy drinks and clubbing. Not breakfast. And certainly not a good breakfast! Apparently though, they're quite famous. Who knew?

But I got suckered in by the $4 breakfast sign early on Saturday morning and thought - why not?

Fatboys is in Ric's Bar in Brunswick Street and a bit of an institution that's been around since long before I came to town in the early 90s. From what I can remember they played live music downstairs and looks like it still does with all the posters dotted around, the last bastian of the slowly disappearing live music scene in Brissie.

But I digress, the $4 breakfast was bacon and sausages, so a no go for us vegetarians, but they had a great breakfast menu with lots of vegetarian options for very reasonable prices from $4 to $16.50. Sweet.

What happy and welcoming staff! You'd think they'd probably have to deal with a stack of drunken louts at this time of the morning, but they were cool and casual and even happy to make my "quarter strength flat white" without so much as snide remark or roll of the eyes. In fact, the barista even said if it was too strong she could bring down an extra jug of milk. Genuine, fabulous service - tick!

I couldn't go past the haloumi stack with potato rosti, poached eggs and turkish fingers on rocket and tomato salad - $12.50. My dining partner got the veggie breakfast - sauteed spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms, eggs, onion jam, fat toast, potato rosti and sauce - $9.50.

My breakfast rocked. I've never seen, for that price, such large servings of haloumi and eggs and two potato rostis. Such good value and so delicious. For the first time in a long, long time, I couldn't finish breakfast.

I wish I'd taken notice of the veggie breakfast. One minute it was there, and looked fabulous and the next minute it was all gone. I take that to be a good sign. He says it was delicious. I say for $9.50 that was awesome value.

I have a new found respect for Fatboys. I note they still have their more well known menu with burgers, pizzas, steaks and pastas, but I'll be coming back for the breakfast. I, for one am glad this valley institution is still around and I hope they'll be around for a long time yet to come.
