Are you are looking for a school holiday project that you can make with your kids? Then why not make your own coasters to give as gifts, or to use at your own dinner table! Kids will enjoy creating their own mini pieces of art, and then they can admire it every time they put their cup on it. It is also a special way to capture a moment in time, to seal their pictures in a coaster that you can use for years to come.

While the kids are having fun painting their coasters, you can also get creative too - the kids can't have all the fun!

What You Need (We bought everything from Bunnings)

**Mdf Coasters - $1 each
Acrylic paint - $3.90 each
Miniature paint rollers - $2.20 a kit
Paint Brushes - $1.45 each
Gloss Acrylic Spray Sealer (which is waterproof) - $17.98
Permanent Black Marker - $1.98
Sand paper - $1.05 **

What To Do

1/ Peel the price sticker off the back of each coaster and use sandpaper to make it smooth.

2/ Lay down a protective sheet or old towel on a table, and squirt your base colour paint onto each MDF coaster. Use your miniature roller to paint all over the top. Allow to dry for 1 hour, then add a second coat.

3/ When the first side is dry, flip over and paint two coats on the back.

4/ Add your design to the coasters. Kids can paint their own design, or you can trace a pattern for them to fill in. If they have a favourite character, you can also print it out and trace it onto the coaster for them to colour. Although I used paint for the cockatoo designs, my daughter preferred to use pencils and textas, which worked just as well. Get creative!

5/ Use a permanent black marker to carefully draw along the edges of the coasters.

6/ Take your coasters outside to a well-ventilated area and lay them on a plastic sheet. Shake your Gloss Spray for 2 minutes, as per the directions, then spray over the coasters in light sprays, from top to bottom. Allow to dry and then spray a light second coat. Ensure you read the directions on the can and spray upside down between each coat, to clear the nozzle.

7/ Flip them over onto a clean part of plastic and spray the back twice also. Allow to dry.

8/ Give them as a gift, or keep them for yourself!
