I'm a Melbourne girl, born and bred, and new resident of Geelong. Fantabulous adventures await as I explore my gorgeous new city and the stunning Surf Coast. But don’t worry—I’ll be crossing the bridge regularly to get my Melbourne fix.
A fantabulous fun-filled day for all the family
The Family Fun Day at the Shed is back for 2015, so hold on to your spuds folks, as it's going to be a ripper of a day. This free community event is on Sunday 25 October at The Potato Shed in Geelong, and will have something for kids—and big kids—of all ages. The Family Fun Day will run from 11am to 3pm, and is a perfectly fitting way to kick off Children's Week in Geelong.
The Potato Shed is a multi-purpose arts and cultural centre, opened in 2001, and is an integral part of the Bellarine and Geelong communities. It has a 250-seat theatre, studios, dressing rooms, practice rooms and space for everything from yoga to art exhibitions to meetings to performances, as well plenty of outdoor space. And every inch will be taken up with children and games, music and food and fun galore at the Family Fun Day.
For the little drama queens and kings in your life, there's plenty happening inside the theatre to keep them entertained and enthralled. Theatre 3Triple2 will be performing Willie's Bush Adventure from 11am, followed by bush tales around the campfire and The Improv Guys doing what they do best—making it up on the fly, with giggles aplenty. For the musically-minded members of your family, the multi-purpose room will come alive with the sounds of African, Latin and Arabian drumming, and there'll be Mini Maestros interactive music sessions for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers.
Adventure and action will await your every step as you move outdoors to the grounds of The Potato Shed, beginning with the Sports Zone, which runs continuously throughout the day. For your sports-mad youngsters they'll be able to try tennis, soccer, hockey, football and even karate and fishing, with local sports clubs on site to help them have a go and perhaps find their new passion. And if the little tackers still have some bursts of energy left (let's face it—at an event like this, all kids are going to go just a little crazy and will no doubt have energy to burn!) they can continue on their crazy ways at the Skate Park, the Monster Truck Bouncing Castle (doesn't that sound just awesome?!) and the Bungee Run.

There's also plenty of outdoor activities that are a little less 'energetic', in case your child (or you) needs something just a little more slower paced. There will be an animal farm, face painting and badge making, Butterfly Adventures and Hip Hop with Bec Fairey. And if you really need a bit of time-out, head to the Chill Out Zone inside The Potato Shed and curl up on a beanbag or play some games with the Bellarine Jongleurs.

And of course, among all these games and activities and children going just a little crazy, the centre of the day's entertainment will be the main outdoor stage, with a jam-packed schedule of performances. There'll be something for all musical tastes, ranging from alternative rock, to ballet to local singing groups to the Just Brass Youth Band. Snag yourself a patch of grass in front of the stage, and park your derriere there for a while as you soak up the music and atmosphere, and of course, don't forget the Official Opening at 12pm.

In amongst this fabulous line-up of entertainment is the headline act for the Family Fun Day—The Mik Maks. Yep, that's right folks, the stupendously entertaining Mik Maks are back for 2015, and the four slightly wacky, extremely colourful brothers will be performing on stage to make you and your little ones laugh and dance and sing and clap and just generally have a good time. You'll be hard-pressed not to be caught up in the enthusiasm and energy that emanates from The Mik Maks, and as they dance and sing their way across the stage, you'll find your toes will be tapping all afternoon.
With all these games and activities, singing and dancing, you'll no doubt work up quite the appetite. And the Food Court at this year's Family Fun Day at The Shed will not disappoint. Birregurra Ice Cream will be there with the most fabulous creamed confections, there'll be chips, chocolates and drinks from the Potato Shed Kiosk, and Rockin Donuts will tempt you with their doughy treats. The Lions Club of Portarlington Drysdale will be sizzling up a storm at the sausage sizzle, and of course, there'll be hot baked potatoes and all the trimmings--because what would a fun day at The Potato Shed be without real potatoes? And if all that hasn't made you hungry, Geelong's very own Mexican foodtruck Sidewalk Cantina will be there, serving up their deliciously addictive Mexican fare with a side of flare.

The Potato Shed is in Drysdale, about 20 minutes from the heart of the Geelong CBD. There's plenty of parking available, toilet and first aid facilities on site, and it's also wheelchair accessible. The Family Fun Day is an event not to be missed, and with so much to do and only four hours to do it, you'd best start thinking about your plan of attack now! Check out the Events Geelong website for the full event programme and schedule and we'll see you at The Shed!
