Welcome to the Secret List: the ultimate list of fun and unusual things to do with your kids in Perth this month.

May is an interesting month – the kids are back at school and the weather is cooling down.


Moondyne Festival
If you love a bit of history, take the kids down to Toodyay for the Moondyne festival for a day of fun and convicts. Visitors are welcome to dress up and take part in the free olden days family activities such as egg and spoon races, horse and camel rides and billy cart racing. There will also be food stalls, arts and craft, vintage cars and bikes, stilt walkers, antiques and more.

Mt Hawthorn Streets and Laneways Festival
After the success of the inaugural event last year the Mt Hawthorn Streets and Laneways Festival is back with pop-up bars, cooking displays, markets, live music and entertainment and more. A great family event you can spend half a wandering the area and listening to great music and entertainment on four different stages (the Meze laneway stage will have all the great free kids entertainment).

When: Sunday 1st May, 11am-7pm
Where: various streets in Mt Hawthorn in and around the Meze Shopping Centre (Flinders St)

Mothers' Day Fayre
You have to love a 'fayre' – it makes you think a knight in shining armour will come along at any minute and swoop you up on his big white horse. Or perhaps you can just browse the 45 stalls for a great Mothers' Day gift for your mum (or yourself) and let the kids be entertained with free face painting, music and balloon twisting. There will be a café onsite as well.

Maylands Festival
Another great street festival today is in Maylands, part of the Autumn Festival . With a mobile skate park, local musicians, dedicated children's zone with rides, entertainment and a mini Hawkers market as well as plenty of adult friendly foods, pop-up bars, food trucks, artisan stalls and more, it will be a fun afternoon for the whole family.

Star Wars Day
May The Fourth Be With You! Geddit?
4th of May is now known as Star Wars Day and if nothing else it is good fun to walk around telling people 'May the Fourth Be With You.

REmida Mothers' Day Craft
For a Mothers' Day present with a difference, take the kids along REmida so they can create and sculpt a one-of-a-kind gift with repurposed 'non-craft' materials. With a sausage sizzle and a lot of imagination, it will make your mothers' day one to REmember.

When: Saturday 7th May, 12.30-3.30pm

The Big Draw
Over two big days in our southern sister of Mandurah, will be the Big Draw, part of the Stretch Arts Festival . With a huge number activities each day including community art projects, Mothers Day crafts, murals, magic carpets, local artists, professional classes, free cupcake decorating and the opportunity for people of all ages to learn to draw with everything from crayons to bark – you could easily spend the weekend just wandering from location to location. Happy Hour Go-Karts
If your kids love to go fast then take them to Kart World in Belmont for special deals after school during May. Kids will have two 20 lap races plus a free icypole, and for the really little kids – there are twin carts so you can drive with them.

When: Monday to Thursday (school term only) 3pm-5pm

Zoorassic Park
If you haven't been to Perth Zoo to see the 19 life size, roaring moving dinosaurs then you still have time before these amazing creatures go back to extinction. Dotted around the Perth Zoo, these mind-boggling displays will have you wondering whether you are an extra in the Jurassic Park 4 (or is it 5?). Follow the map to find all the dinosaurs and participate in other activities such as fossil dig pits, puzzles and colouring-in.

Family Fair, Maida Vale
If you are new to this parenting thing or just like to stay informed, the Family Fair – celebrating National Families Week - will showcase an Expo of providers and services from the Royal Life Saving Society to the Australian Breastfeeding Society and learn about all the great baby and toddler classes from Toddle Jam to Baby Sign.

There will also be games and attractions, a climbing wall, petting zoo and Scitech. Buy a sausage sizzle and icecream and feel informed.

Time Honoured Tales
Part of the Fremantle Heritage Festival , this special session for toddlers and pre-schoolers will introduce them to some of the classic books that their parents and grandparents may have grown up with. With stories, rhymes, songs and craft this will be a special morning for little ones.

For older kids, they can come along to special writing and illustration workshops and add their own story to a special book being created about kids in Fremantle. There multiple sessions and cost $5 each. Click here for further information.
