Kampung Temasek is the brainchild of a group of outdoor leaders, blessed with a 10-acre site in Johore, Malaysia by a Singaporean philanthropist. As a not-for-profit organisation, it aims to bring back the
kampung (village) spirit as the region hurls towards urbanity.
Family Day is on May 1st 2013, with aplenty of
kampung activities.
At their last Family Day, my friend's 2 year old made
prata (Indian flatbread). Tastiness is not guaranteed, but at least fun sure is! Curry and dhal is provided.
There is also fishing using coconut fronts instead of a regular rod. You get to cook your catch on hot coals after as well, just like in the old days.
Many folks love eating
satay and
ketupat is a traditional rice pack cooked in woven palm fronds. Participants can eat their handmade
ketupats with peanut sauce.
If you are interested in gaining a skill to go home with, there are opportunities to learn either square foot gardening or bottle gardening from Kampung Temasek facilitators. The plants can be grown using recycled materials.
If you have children, they will get excited by the kite-making and flying activity. The kids can get hands on with local kite making experts, learning to make and decorate their own.
In reliving the
kampung days, there is an interactive play area set up for good ole games like marbles, five stones, chatek, zero point and hop scotch.
All workshops are ongoing at all times. So while the kids are busy chasing the duck and the geese around the pond, kick back and relax at the local
warung (coffee shop) and have a coffee or tea.
There is an optional detour to the Aeon Mall at the end of the day for those who need to pick up their groceries for the week.
