Fire, Tools, Garden and Art Exhibition at Carrick Hill

Carrick Hill is a significant South Australian tourism attraction. It comprises a major heritage building which was the previous home of Sir Edward Hayward and Lady Ursula Howard who married in 1935. It is fortunate to be one of the few period homes in Australia to survive with its original contents almost completely intact and its grounds undiminished.

Sir Edward Hayward was the son of the wealthy merchant family that for more than 100 years owned John Martin's Ltd, once Adelaide's greatest department store. His wife Ursula Barr Smith was the daughter of an even wealthier family of Scottish descent, whose involvement in mining and pastoral activities was vital to the development of South Australia.


Ursula's father gave the couple the land on which Carrick Hill now stands as a wedding present. The estate houses internationally significant art collections, original subsidiary buildings such as stables, and approximately 40 hectares of land and around 26 hectares of native bushland.

In conjunction with the The National Trust of South Australia Carrick Hill will present a special family day entitled Fire, Tools, Garden and Art from 10.00am to 3.00pm on Sunday 20 September.

The day will include displays of historic fire fighting memorabilia, antique firearms, historic fire engines, along with the Adelaide Fire Chief's 1950 fire engine red Jaguar XK120 Roadster.


The Historic Tools Association will present displays and demonstrations in front of the house and The Glenelg Brass Band will perform from 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm on the Elms Lawns.

Talks will be given on the Cypress Lawns by the CFS and The Historical Tools Association. Carrick Hill Director Richard Heathcote will speak about their current exhibition Endless Pleasure - The art of gardens and gardening between 11.30 am and 12.30 pm. This exhibition traces how trends and fashions have shaped what Australians in all walks of life have chosen to experience in gardening whether as a private or professional pursuit.

For this day only, admission to the Carrick Hill grounds is just $15.00 per car, payable at the main entrance to Carrick Hill. There's also discounted entry into the house at $8 per person. Bargain!

Carrick Hill is located at 46 Carrick Hill Drive Springfield, and is open Wednesday to Sundays and Public Holidays 10.00am to 4:30pm.
