I am not the best cyclist, and when I have to negotiate turning and indicating by releasing one of my arms it normally ends in disaster! So, you can imagine my dismay when my husband suggested taking the children cycling. My husband had already put the idea to my three year old, who was bouncing up and down with excitement. I had no get out clause.

[ADVERT]We made our way to Point Fraser Reserve and to the About Bike Hire company who specialise in all types of bikes. The staff were very friendly and were excellent at giving us information and helping strap us all in to a family bike. My six month old sat proudly on the front seat and my three year old squeezed in between us. I was put in charge of steering as my knees would probably not hit the steering wheel, and my husband was put in charge of navigation. We need not have worried as we were simply heading up to The Bell Tower and back.

As we set off the baby was squealing with delight and the the year old was having a wonderful time honking the horn at anyone daring to be on the cycle path. It turned out to be a fantastic experience, fun to do as a family and to take in the breathtaking views of the Swan River . People stopped to wave and say hello and the gentle breeze took off the heat of the day. I must admit the thighs were burning a little by the time I returned but it was well worth it.

I strongly recommend sun hats and sunscreen as the cover on the bike doesn't give much protection and to put two hours on the car parking so that you can indulge in an ice cream at The Bell Tower and not worry about rushing back.
