Celebrating the International Year of Family Farming, Farming Champions are bringing the family farm into Perth City for the public to experience. The special event, Farmer on Your Plate, is expected to attract thousands of people over the day.

Farming Champions want to engage with the community about the importance of family farms and the alarming numbers of farmers leaving the land in Australia. The event aims to celebrate the importance of agriculture to Australia. Farming Champions are a group of WA women, supported by men and women, who want to bring agricultural issues to the attention of the public.

The event will be opened at 12 noon by His Excellency Malcolm McCusker, AC CVO QC, Governor of Western Australia. His Excellency is also an official patron of the event.

Farming Champions spokeswoman Mary Nenke will speak at 12.15pm and be available for media interviews on the day. Western Australian farmers will be presenting their farming stories throughout the day and will be available to speak to the public.

Mary, a Kukerin-based farmer, former Rural Woman of the Year winner and co-owner of business Cambinata Yabbies, says, "The event hopes once again to put agriculture high on the political menu. Everyone attending the day will be encouraged to record their participation, sign up to be a Farming Champion and to table what actions they would like to see with regards to improving rural Western Australia. We want all Australians to champion farming. Please support the hand that feeds you by becoming a Farming Champion. It isn't a sympathy vote for poor farmers, it's about poor Australia if we lose our farmers."

The event will also feature a variety of free attractions including a rare Western Australian performance by the Royal Australian Navy's Admirals Own Big Band, farm produce, face painting and Nigel's animal petting zoo from 10.30am to 3pm. Last year's inaugural event was held in February and attracted several thousand people.

Prominent West Australians who are WA Farming Champions include Dale Alcock, Must Restaurateur Russell Blaikie, butcher Vince Gareffa and regional food advocates and chefs Don Hancey and Chris Taylor of Fraser's Restaurant. Don and Chris will be cooking up great WA produce for visitors to sample on the day.
