This 16-episode South Korean drama started in 2003, when a family moved to the floor above the apartment that Yoon Joo-won and her dad live. This new family just lost their daughter and decided to move to a new town where no one would feel pity about their loss. Kim San-ha, the son of this new family, is always left alone as his parents still couldn’t cope with the passing of their daughter. Joo-won, on the other hand, felt very happy as she thought that she had her own big brother who lived on top of their apartment. Joo-won only lives with her dad as her mum passed away when she was still very young.

One day, Joo-won’s dad went on a blind date with a very pretty woman. This woman has a son, Kang Hae-joon. After one blind date, the next day Hae-joon’s mum asked for money from Joo-won’s dad because she needed that money to open her new hair salon in Seoul. Without thinking twice, Joo-won’s dad gave the money to this woman. Not only that, Joo-won’s dad decided to take Hae-joon as well to live with him. Hae-joon’s mum originally planned to leave Hae-joon with his aunty, and not bring him to Seoul with her. At the same time, Kim San-ha mum decided to leave him with his dad because she wanted to pursue her own happiness.

This leaves Joo-won with her 2 big brothers, Kim San-ha and Kang Hae-joon. Ten years after that, the bonding between Joo-won and her 2 big brothers become more and more close. They become a family by choice.

But after 10 years, their past still haunted the three of them. In high school time, these 3 brothers and sisters had a tough time because they did not share the same surname. Kim San-ha’s mum re-married again and she has another daughter who resembles her late daughter. One day, Kang Hae-joon’s dad showed up after having never been in the picture since he was born. His dad needs a heir so that his money won’t be divided to his new wife. The story is even more twisted when Hae-joon’s mum comes to visit Joo-won’s dad, and gives him money to cover all the costs to raise her son. But she doesn’t want to meet her son.

These 3 brothers and sisters realise that their happiness only happens when they are brave enough to unravel their past. Family by Choice, starring Hwang In-youp, Bae Hyun-sung ( Gyeongseong Creature 2 and What's Wrong with Secretary Kim ) and Jung Chae-yeon, is a story about love, family and forgiveness.
