If you fancy yourself an amateur scientist and huddle over your inventions in your shed like Doc Brown from Back to the Future or your teenager scrawls complex equations on a whiteboard like a young Einstein, then this event may be for both of you.

FameLab is a British Council international science communications competition which pits today's up and coming scientists against each other by asking them to explain scientific concepts in three minutes with no science jargon.



FameLab are running live on stage events across Australia in which entrants will entertain the public with their new research and science tales with the proviso that the explanations are short and sharp.

You will hear entrants explain topics as diverse as open source medicine for malaria, fuel from microalgae, dolphins and noise pollution, fish and climate change and making atomic clocks even more accurate.



There will be entrants from the Centre for Marine Science and Technology, University of Western Australia, Curtin University, Edith Cowan and Murdoch University.

The state winners will then compete in the FameLab final in May to win a spot at the Cheltenham Science Festival in the UK.

The night will be hosted by science communicator, Sarah Lau. The judges will include Professor Ian Small, WA Scientist of the Year, Gillian O'Shaughnessy (ABC) and Kirsten Freeman (British Council).

This free event is on Thursday, 9th April 2015 from 6.30pm-8.30pm at the NWS Shipping Theatre at the WA Maritime Museum, Fremantle.
