Alpine Sled Dog Racing
For something a little different this winter why not head on up to Falls Creek for the annual Falls Creek Sled Dog Classic, one of a growing number of events staged at ski resorts around the nation where different breeds of sled dog compete against one another in thrilling cross-country races pulling their sled and 'musher', or driver.
As many as 40 teams will contest this years Falls Creek Sled Dog Classic through the bush and into the Alpine Village.
This year the event will be contested on Friday and Saturday the 4th & 5th August.
At Falls Creek as many as 40 teams comprised mostly of Siberian and Alaskan Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes and Eurohounds compete in Australia's premier sled dog race over a 5 Kilometre course through the village after dark.
Different classes of racing apply for 2, 3, 4 and 6 dog teams competing in the only event in Australia to actually race through an Alpine village.
It may not be the Arctic tundra but the thrill of sled dog racing at Falls Creek attracts competitors from around the nation.
2017 is the 7th annual running of the Classic and will include the first ever Junior Challenge events for young mushers aged 13 to 18 years of age competing in 2,3 & 4 dog classes.
Friday and Saturdays events will both start at 6 PM. Friday's start line will be at Windy Corner Car Park and Saturday's at Slalom Plaza.
No more playing around you two, there's a race to be won.
Make a date to head on up to Victoria's Alpine National Park and the Falls Creek Alpine Village for this somewhat unusual Australian sporting classic.
Falls Creek is 386 Kilometres from Melbourne via the Hume Freeway to Wangaratta then the C522 and C534, about a 4 hour 45 minute drive in good conditions. Note: All vehicles entering the resort must carry snow chains during snow season (June 10 to October 1), including AWD and 4WD vehicles. Snow chains can be hired en-route from a number of businesses in either Myrtleford or Mt Beauty.
Perhaps next year for you little fella ............
