"Look at the castle Mummy" my 3 year old daughter yelled as we drove up the drive way to the in Anakie. A magical feeling of anticipation and excitement started to spread over me, after seeing the castle on the hill - I was even looking forward to visit.

The park claims to be one of Australia's first and oldest theme parks. This could well be true as a friend's mother remembers visiting the same park as a child. An hour west of Melbourne in the small town of Anakie, it is well worth the trip. It is reasonably priced with adults costing $16, child $8 and children under the age of three are free.

Built on a rocky outcrop in the Brisbane rangers, I was pleasantly surprised by the thirty animated fairy tales and ancient myth displays. Sequels of delight and shrieks laughter echoed around us as we walked up along the yellow brick path. Some of the group ran past Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty until we got to Puff the Magic Dragon close to the top of the hill.



At the top of the hill we found a fantastic lookout. If you have a pram, be prepared to push it up hill and then hold on as you are going down as some parts are quite steep. It may have been around for a long time but it looks like each of the displays have been well maintained and have even been painted recently.

Checking the website before we left home it mentions a café and kiosk are available for refreshments. I was relieved that we had decided not to rely on these and I had packed a picnic lunch, neither the café or kiosk were open on the day that we visited. I have since read that the Castle café is open on weekends, public holidays and school holidays. The park does have excellent BBQ facilities and under cover picnic shelters. They also have castle areas that can seat up to 300 people, perfect for a party.

Both my daughter and I agree that the highlight of the park is the medieval "Camelot" playground. We spent more time in the playground than any other part of the park. It was very hard to drag the little ones away from the giant slippery slide or the old school play equipment. There is even a toddler friendly part for the smaller prince or princess.

The park is an hour west of Melbourne or half an hour from Geelong. I have even been asked "When are we going back?" So it is well worth the trip.

The park website is defiantly worth looking at before you go. It is well laid out and gives excellent information. For those of you who have a smart phone, the mobile site is also well built.
