The is a walk on North Head in Manly that provides remarkable views across Sydney Harbour, including those from Fairfax Lookout. It was these views that brought me here, but, as I've learnt, they're not actually the only reason to visit.

In addition to offering awesome views, the is also a really good place to go whale-watching, as you can see out to the ocean from multiple points along the walk. Humpback and Southern Right whales pass by twice a year, heading north in June and July, and back south to the Antarctic between August and October.

As well as the views the walk also passes a small, but historically significant building. It was built in 1920 and served as a gunning placement and bunker for those who kept watching over Sydney Harbour during WWII. If you're interested in learning more about the area's military history, I recommend also visiting North Fort, also on North Head, which was once an army base and now offers 70 minute weekend tours exploring the base and its underground tunnels.

The begins and ends at the car park at the end of North Head Scenic Drive, taking the form of a mostly flat, sealed loop that's 762m long. Fairfax Lookout is even wheelchair accessible.

As well as North Fort, you'll also find Q Station up on the headland. There are other walks too, like the Shelly Beach to Barrack Precinct Walk. A loop of the headland is even included as a detour from the from the Manly Scenic Walkway, a 19.5km trek from Spit Bridge to Manly (a longer version of the 10km walk that used to end at Manly wharf).
