The art exhibition Face2Face answers the question - what happens if you put two talented artists together and give them a collaborative theme and project? The answer is: two different outlooks that come together to form something unique, working in harmony to create something beautiful.

Space2B is the brainchild of Janine Lawrie, who wanted to create a space to welcome refugees and give them a place to grow and be part of the community while sharing their special gifts.

The Face2Face art project is an extension of that vision - bringing together an established artist and an emerging one from two different cultures.

The two artists of the current exhibition (running until the end of May 2021) are Sandra Tobias (Australian Celtic) and Rahila Zeeshan (Pakistan).

Sandra Tobias is a well-established Melbournian artist who graduated with a Fine Arts Degree in 1984 and has had solo exhibitions in Hong Kong, Japan, and Australia. Many of her works feature an egg tempera medium and abstract urban landscapes that capture the melting pot that is the city.

Sandra said, "Janine asked me if I'd be interested in the Face2Face program... I wasn't sure what to expect. I think because of my urban 'scapes and Rahila's laneway interests, she thought the two would fit."

Rahila Zeeshan hails from Karachi in Pakistan and arrived in Australia three years ago with her husband and children in tow.

Rahila said, "I studied textile design...but I always loved art. That's the thing, you have to have a career and a hobby together. Visual art is something that stayed with me. I can do it anywhere."

Rahila participated in Space2B's Painting for Peace Exhibition and, afterwards, when she called to see if she could collect her artwork she was told it had sold. "Are you sure?" she said when told of the sale. "Well, in that case, I'm not stopping!"

When you see Rahila's colourful laneways, they invoke a sense of mystery and surrealism - even though the perspective is straightforward.

The two artists have very different styles and it's because of that that they both learnt a lot from each other. "I love her whole process of painting and creating artworks," Rahila said about working with Sandra. "Though it's all abstract...every element has a meaning and that's amazing."

Face2Face not only brings two artists together, it brings two cultures together and the lesson for all of us is to find each other's similarities and each other's differences and rejoice in our humanity. "We're all human and we all need to drink water and sleep in a warm bed. The reasons people make those journeys - no one ever needs to leave their home unless it's because of poverty, hunger, war or to simply make a better life for themselves - it's not something you chose to do". - Sandra Tobias
