Direct from the UK and presented in association with Insite Arts, the Exxopolis Luminarium is a monumental structure inspired by Islamic art and architecture, Archimedean solids and Gothic cathedrals. The multi-sensory space is constructed with translucent vinyl and features labyrinthine tunnels and cavernous domes bathed in bright colourful light.
The inflatable structure spans 53 metres in length and nearly nine meters in height. It occupies the space of half a football field and is constructed using 3,000 square metres of plastic. It originally took 55 people six months to build, yet can be erected in as little as four hours and inflated in just 20 minutes.
This unique structure encourages children to engage in imagination learning and inquiry through immersive art. It is also a stimulating space which inspires discussions about art and the power of light. Many people find the Luminaria a place for rest or meditation, where the environment can be both stimulating and calming at the same time.
All visitors receive a map and are invited to remove their shoes before passing through the airlock. Once inside they can wander freely or just lie back and enjoy the structure's ambience.
The radiance of the daylight shining through the Luminarium's coloured PVC is surprisingly bright and directly impacts the senses. No two visits are the same as the atmosphere inside alters according to the changing weather and light outside and how the public inhabits the Luminarium.
The Exxopolis Luminarium is located at the Jam Factory rooftop car park from 14 to 24 August 2014, from 12pm to 9pm daily. The attraction is family-friendly, but please note children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
