Malaga: A Journey Through History, Art, and Andalusian Charm
Our two-week Andalusian adventure was drawing to a close, but not before we made a memorable stop in Malaga, the birthplace of Pablo Picasso. As the second-to-last destination on our journey, Malaga offered us a blend of history, culture, and culinary delights that perfectly encapsulated the spirit of southern Spain.

Arrival in Malaga: A City of Contrasts
We checked into the Barcelo Malaga Hotel, a modern and stylish retreat that provided a comfortable base for our exploration of this vibrant city. The hotel’s contemporary design and convenient location made it an ideal spot to unwind after a day of sightseeing, and its proximity to the train station was perfect for our travel-weary group.
Our introduction to Malaga began with an orientation tour via coach, giving us a broad overview of the city’s layout and landmarks. As we drove through the streets, we were struck by the contrast between the city’s rich historical heritage and its modern, bustling atmosphere. From ancient Roman ruins to sleek, contemporary architecture, Malaga is a city that proudly wears its layers of history.

Exploring Malaga: From Picasso to the Alcazaba
After our orientation, we were dropped off at the city center, ready to immerse ourselves in Malaga’s cultural treasures. Our walking tour began with a visit to the Picasso Museum, a must-see for anyone interested in the life and work of this iconic artist. The museum, housed in a beautifully restored 16th-century palace, showcases an extensive collection of Picasso’s works, spanning his entire career.
While the art was undeniably impressive, our visit took an unexpected turn during the docent-led tour. The guide seemed particularly fascinated by Picasso’s complex personal life, focusing on his numerous relationships and, shall we say, colorful reputation. This emphasis on the artist’s sexual proclivities left my daughter with a rather unexpected takeaway: "I never thought I could leave a museum thinking less of an artist rather than more." It was a reminder that even the most celebrated figures are human, with all the complexities that entails.
Restful Square in Malaga's Alcazaba
Next, we made our way to the Alcazaba, Malaga’s ancient Arab fortress. Built in the 9th century, this sprawling citadel is a stunning example of Moorish architecture and a testament to the city’s Islamic past. As we wandered through its labyrinthine pathways, we were transported to another time, where the walls seemed to whisper stories of centuries gone by.
The Alcazaba’s peaceful oasis, with its lush vegetation and serene water-filled canals, offered a welcome respite from the bustling city below. The gardens, filled with the scent of jasmine and the sound of trickling water, provided a tranquil escape, allowing us to reflect on the deep history that surrounds this remarkable fortress.

Culinary Delights: Dinner at Parador de Malaga
As the sun began to set, we headed to the Restaurant Parador de Malaga for dinner, eager to savor the flavors of Andalusia one last time. Located on the Gibralfaro hill, the Parador offers not only exquisite cuisine but also breathtaking views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea. The menu was a celebration of local ingredients, with dishes that highlighted the region’s rich culinary heritage.
From fresh seafood to hearty stews, each course was a testament to the skill of the chefs and the quality of the local produce. As we dined, the lights of Malaga twinkling below us, we couldn’t help but feel a deep appreciation for the journey we had undertaken. This meal, much like our entire time in Malaga, was a feast for the senses, leaving us with memories that would last long after our return home.

A Brush with Stardom: Antonio Banderas’ Malaga
As if Malaga hadn’t already charmed us with its rich history and vibrant culture, our visit took an unexpected turn when our guide pointed out a very special landmark—the two-floor penthouse home of none other than Antonio Banderas. Perched elegantly above the city, the penthouse offered stunning views of Malaga, and we couldn’t help but feel a thrill knowing that one of Spain’s most beloved actors calls this place home.
What made this moment even more magical was the realization that Banderas’ penthouse overlooks the ancient Roman Theater, a site steeped in history where he once performed. The juxtaposition of modern stardom with ancient history was a reminder of how Malaga seamlessly blends its past and present. Seeing the theater through the eyes of someone who not only cherishes his roots but actively contributes to the city’s cultural life added a special layer of connection to our visit.

Though we learned that Banderas was currently in Madrid, producing his new play, we couldn’t help but feel a pang of disappointment that we wouldn’t be able to see him perform in his hometown. The idea of watching a play directed by Banderas, knowing his deep ties to the city and his love for the arts, would have been the perfect way to cap off our stay in Malaga.
Despite this, just the knowledge that we were in the same city where this Hollywood star lives and breathes was a highlight of our trip. It added a touch of glamour to our day, and as we continued our exploration of Malaga, we couldn’t help but share excited whispers about our brush with stardom. This experience was a fun and unexpected addition to our journey, making our time in Malaga even more unforgettable.

Reflections on Malaga: A City of Endless Stories
Malaga may have been the penultimate stop on our journey, but it left an indelible mark on our hearts. This city, with its rich tapestry of history, art, and culture, offered us a glimpse into the soul of Andalusia. From the ancient walls of the Alcazaba to the modern streets that pulse with life, Malaga is a city of contrasts, where the old and new coexist in perfect harmony.
As we prepared to leave for our final destination, we couldn’t help but reflect on the stories we had encounteredn- some inspiring, others complex, but all woven into the fabric of this remarkable city. We were sad not to enter the Catedral but enjoyed the view from outside. Malaga, with its vibrant energy and deep-rooted history, reminded us that every journey is about more than just the places we visit; it’s about the stories we uncover along the way.
And so, with full hearts and minds brimming with memories, we said goodbye to Malaga, knowing that this city had given us something truly special—a deeper understanding of the past, and an appreciation for the beauty that lies in every corner of Andalusia.
