Getting around in a vast country like Australia can be expensive. There is also planning to be done before you can go exploring. One way to discover our amazing land is to use public transport and save!

Australian cities and regional centres are filled with landmarks, stunning beaches, cultural experiences, and many have abundant bushland areas to explore. With the cost-of-living crisis still an issue, here is how you can explore where you live and save money.

A convenient way to move around is to use the public transport available in your state. Bus, train, light rail, trams, or ferries may be available depending on your location. If you like exploring and going to events, you can save using public transport.

Public transport is economical, it is efficient and with many areas now using electric vehicles, it is environmentally friendly too. Not to mention that for large groups, public transport is the best way to move a lot of people around. And most states have transports connecting you directly to key destinations without the hassle of driving or finding a park (which can be expensive).

You may have public transport cards available in your state. Sydney has the Opal Card, Melbourne has the Myki Card and South Australia has a companion card that may be useful in other states.

You can purchase these cards at train stations, convenience stores and online. The Opal and Myki cards have a top-up system so your funds are available when needed and be sure to tap on and off when boarding and alighting.

You will have endless adventures when you use public transport. If you have time and access to ferry transport, then take a trip on a ferry. This is one of the most leisurely ways to see the attractions in your area.

Here are a few tips for a smooth journey:
  • Be sure to plan ahead
  • Travelling off-peak can save you even more
  • Not all public transport accepts cash, check with your state’s transport provider
  • Check for updates regarding delays or track works.

  • Also, check trip planning websites in your state or use travel platforms like Australia.com, Lonely Planet, and TripAdvisor to access detailed information and itineraries for each state.

There are also app-based trip planners like -
    Roadtrippers
This app is great for planning your next Australian road trip with route optimisation and points of interest.
    Wanderlog
This is a versatile app because you can create custom itineraries, add locations and there are map views too.

By choosing public transport, you’re helping to reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions. It’s a small step towards a greener Australia, which means we all contribute to a better future for all.

Catching public transport is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the city’s rhythm and is a cost-effective option. With a little forward planning, you can explore treasures in your hometown without spending a fortune.
