I actually lived in Petone in the late 1960's. Then it was a nice little working-class borough town, with a freezing works and some large manufacturing plants, a lot of small firms, a number of older hotels and few eating establishments. We had six-o-clock closing and no night life to speak of - those days you did your own entertaining. For a few years, my old town!

Now it's a tourist suburb of Lower Hutt city, after the amalgamations of 1989 - the freezing works and old manufacturing plants long gone. Petone now has a little kick in it's step. It has promoted Jackson Street with its colonial style buildings as an echo from a by-gone age.

From its advertising: You can find an eclectic (like that word) range of modern businesses - speciality shops, fashion boutiques, cafes, bars, restaurants and movie theatres. Walking further to the west end of the street you'll find large retailers offering big brands at lower prices. Jackson Street the complete entertainment and food destination. You should come - I might run into you some time.

At the " Jackson Street " site you'll discover there has been and will have more Heritage Month activities. They invite you to share the time with them.
