The countdown to Christmas is on which has left me racking my brain for ideas for gifts for the kids in the family aged from 1 to 15. I don't want to think about finding a car park at a shopping centre this late in the year or spend hours choosing gifts that may or may not be welcome and useful. So I've come up with some alternative ideas for gifts that can be easily arranged from a phone or laptop, are aimed at providing happy experiences and memories and take up no room at all in the house.

1. Lessons

These can be very personalised gifts chosen according to a child's interests. Do they love magic, dance, art, music, languages, writing, crafts, sports, computer programming, cooking, digital scrapbooking, sewing, photography, robot design, languages, the circus? Or might they be interested in learning about them? Buy them some lessons for Christmas.

2. Passes or vouchers for a favorite activity

The possibilities are endless although choices will be subject to your budget and the kids' interests. Think movies, stand up paddleboard, skateboarding, fun runs, mini golf, paint ball, bowling, rock climbing, indoor bounce houses, go karts, Luna Park, water parks, the penguins at St Kilda or Phillip Island, Werribee Zoo, Kryal Castle and Sovereign Hill. Red Balloon and giftitnow have some great suggestions for kids activities.

3. Performances and Events

This could be tickets for Wiggles or Dorothy the Dinosaur performances, the latest hot band, music festival or sporting event, local plays, sand sculpting displays, themed high teas, you get the idea. If they have a dog, tickets to one of the many dog-focussed festivals and events could be just the thing.

4. Memberships

A zoo membership can be a golden gift for the parents as well as the kids as it allows the family to visit Melbourne Zoo, Werribee Open Range Zoo and Healesville sanctuary whenever they want for as long or short a time as they want for a year. Museums Victoria membership offers unlimited free general entry to Melbourne Museum, Scienceworks and Immigration Museum. Many sports clubs have provision for junior members so a membership to a child's favourite football, basketball, golf, surf or other sporting club could be a well appreciated gift. From coding to woodworking, whatever their interest, there'll be a club for it.

5. Digital Subscriptions

Epic has 20,000 ebooks for kids 12 and under by subscription, there's also Sesame Street and Reading Rainbow. Amazon, Apple and Google all have music and video subscriptions as well as digital gift cards and vouchers.

That's a few ideas to provide some inspiration. If you take an individual child's likes and interests into consideration when choosing their experience gift, you should end up with a winner and the great pleasure of giving something that brings happiness to the recipient. Of course experience gifts don't need to be limited just to the kids, there's probably a number of people on your Christmas list that would love something experiential so it's an option worth keeping in mind, particularly when you need that last minute gift and the shops are closed.
