More timely now than ever, EXIT is a must-see installation that visually represents the most urgent crises that the world faces today.
"Since 2008, natural disasters displace on average 26 million people per year - that is one person every second".
Projected on the immense 360 degree map of the world, EXIT visualises trends and facts that are impossible to comprehend otherwise: global movement of displaced populations over time, impacts of natural and man-made disasters, effects of climate change and the rising sea levels.
The experience is as immersive as it is sobering. The sheer scale of the events is staggering.
Drawing data from UNESCO and World Bank, among other sources, EXIT translates statistics into maps, arresting your attention and revealing a bigger picture.
The installation was commissioned by the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in Paris. It is based on the idea by Paul Virilio and created by Diller Scofidio Renfro, Mark Hansen, Laura Kurgan and Ben Rubin, in collaboration with Robert Gerard Pietrusko, Stewart Smith.
it was first exhibited at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris to coincide with 2015 UN global climate talks.
To exhibit EXIT in Sydney, a dedicated theatre and a 360 degree screen had to be built at the UNSW Galleries. It really is like nothing you have ever seen. It is a reality check, that none of us can afford to miss.
